Elisa Vicente, social worker at the Guam Corps’ Family Services Center, was recently nominated for Social Worker of the Year, an award given by the Guam Association of Social Workers. Although Vicente was not ultimately chosen, the nomination itself was an honor. While Vicente’s fellow nominees have had many years of experience, this was her first year as a social worker after completing her degree.

SALUTE FROM THE ELKS
Majors Ron and Marilyn Bawden, Santa Monica, Calif., corps officers, were recently honored as “Citizens of the Year” by the local Elks Lodge. A fitting tribute for a very busy couple.

TIME TO SHINE!
Tucson, Ariz., Amphi Corps (Majors Ben and Martha Nunes, c.o.) recently hosted Talent Showcase 2000. Admission was only $1.00 for an afternoon of great family entertainment, including singing, dancing, rapping, and mime. Sounds like good family fun!

PROUD TO ANNOUNCE…
David Church, soldier of the Pasadena, Calif., Tabernacle Corps, and son of Colonels George and Joy Church (R) has just received his Doctorate of Music Education from USC. He has been newly appointed Professor of Music at George Fox University, Newberg, Ore., and will become the conductor for the Chehelam Symphony. Congratulations for these fine accomplishments!

APPRECIATION EXPRESSED
Lt. Colonel Gladys Bodine (ARCC, Central Territory), would like to express her deep appreciation to all her friends throughout the territory who have sent messages of encouragement and assurances of prayer support during her recent surgeries and recuperation. “We praise God that the cancer has been removed, and thank you for your continuing prayer support throughout this experience. Your thoughtfulness has been a tremendous source of encouragement and strength.”

CFOT SINGS OUT
The recent CFOT dinner theater, with the theme, “A Century Sings Out,” was a roaring success. Commissioner David Edwards and Major Doug O’Brien presented Cathy L. Allen, president of Bay Cities National Bank, with the “Others” award for her outstanding community work and support of The Salvation Army. Ed Clay of the CFOT Board of Advisors was also recognized for his untiring efforts on our behalf.

The event raised $30,450 for World Services and the CFOT hosted about 1,000 visitors on campus over the weekend.

SOCK IT TO ‘EM!
The Roswell, N. M., corps recently sponsored its first Soccer Tournament, with 20 teams participating from the areas of Roswell, Dexter and Carlsbad, N.M. The Roswell corps had 21 children ages 7-12 participating for a total of five teams.

Envoy Diana Gomes’ team made it to the finals, coming in second. One secret of success was the support of all the parents. About 230 people were cheering them on, including children, parents, and friends.

HOW COULD WE FORGET…
In a previous column we listed retired officers who had reached their 90th birthdays. It has been pointed out that Brigadier William Mollett (R), of Honolulu, Hawaii, will be 98 years old on September 13, 2000. He is the oldest retired Western officer.
