The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) recently recognized each of the Territorial Community Relations Directors at a special service held at National Headquarters. “In spite of the many duties and obligations they encounter on a daily basis, their response to aid SAWSO goes far beyond what we would expect,” stated SAWSO Executive Director Harden White.

GREAT VBS!

Lt. Raymond R. Erickson-King, Honokaa, Hawaii, corps officer, says they had 48 for the Sunday morning vacation Bible school graduation service, and three families were new to the Army.

Erickson-King was very impressed and inspired by the service corps team of Danielle Donnelly, Senelyn John, Roger Ludiazo, and David Utrera, who helped make the VBS a success.

PENCIL MONEY ADDS UP

Mrs. Hathorn’s sixth grade class at Jewett Middle School, Reedsport, Ore., recently sent a check for $25.00 to Major Kurt Burger, Cascade divisional commander, with the note: “Throughout the year, our teacher has been picking up pens and pencils off the floor. She puts them in a jar on her desk. Then when people need pens or pencils, we write our name on a piece of paper and take what we need. She charges us 10 cents for pencils and 15 cents for pens. We took a vote recently to find out where we should give the money to. We decided to give it to you, and you guys can do whatever you want with it.”

ARMY AIDS SEARS DONATION

In connection with a huge donation of clothing from Sears, The Salvation Army in San Francisco will see that the clothing is properly distributed. “Our goal,” says Lt. Colonel Bettie Love, San Francisco City Administrator, “is to provide school clothing, plus school supplies. Volunteers, including teens in WB20’s ‘Something to Believe in’ program, will act as personal shoppers to help children make their selections in a retail-like setting.”

CHINA DIARY

Lt. Colonel Check Yee (R), who served as director for The Salvation Army’s Program Service office in Kun-ming, Yunnan, China, has written a book, “China Diary.”

Written in Chinese, it is published by Bai Wei Lung Press in Hong Kong, and is sold in China and the U.S.

“China Diary” is a vivid reflection of the writer’s experience among the poor and his compassion for them.
