After 50 years of serving thousands of meals to as many children, Camp Home-lani’s dining room was crumbling at the seams. With hard work and good planning by MajorsDon and Jan Mowery, architects, workers, and Camp Managers Joe and Barbie Harvey-Hall, the dining room is now fit for company.
On hand to dedicate the facility, Colonel Bill Luttrell, chief secretary, was enthusiastic about the changes to the entire camp. He reminded the gathering that this work is for the thousands of disadvantaged youngsters who will have an opportunity to spend a week at camp swimming, playing games, exploring the environment, learning to work together as a team, and to make right decisions that lead to productive, healthy lives.
HARBOR LIGHT RAISES FUNDS
The San Francisco Harbor Light recently had a successful fundraiser dinner at Gabbiano’s Restaurant. Over $21,000 was raised on this evening, where long time Advisory Council member Jack Block was recognized for his 48 years of continuous service.
SCOUT HONORED
Michael Bauer was presented his Boy Scout “God and Life” award during the morning service at the Pasadena Tabernacle by Major Chick Yuill. Mike currently is a student at the University of California Irvine, where he is pursuing a degree in physics.
FREEMANS IN THE NEWS
Lts. Daniel and Doreen Freeman recently received good publicity in the Bremerton, Wash., Sun, telling about their five-generation Army backgrounds and giving information about services. It is good to see local papers introducing the city’s Salvation Army officers.
TURLOCK TOGETHER
The Turlock, Calif., community has come together to create a Christmas Center for those in need. Turlock Together is the effort, and together the communities of Turlock,Hilmar, Denari, Keyes, Chatom and Mountain View are working as a team to meet the Christmas needs for this season.
Volunteers will be registering families for the “Blessing Baskets,” sorting food and building the food boxes throughout the month.
“PUTTING” SHOES ON KIDS
The Rotary Club of Aurora, Colo., and the Aurora Corps recently provided new shoes for 18 underprivileged children. The funds for this project were raised during a “putting” contest at a recent Rotary meeting. Captain Kevin L. Mullin, corps officer, says, “We are once again blessed to have the assistance of the Rotary Club of Aurora in this venture; they do so much for our community. Also, thank you to Payless Shoes, who donated 20 percent of the cost of the shoes.”
CAMPERS REJOICE
“Rejoice” was the theme as the Del Oro and Golden State Divisions held a combined Creative Ministries Camp at Redwood Glen. Special guests Captains Stephen andMarcia Smith led 177 campers in a nine-day spree of music, ministry, and creative arts. The many electives kept everyone happily occupied. Campers were encouraged to find ways to rejoice in their commitment to God and to look for creative ways to share the Gospel message. Skills are already being put to use at various corps, and there are plans for another combined camp next year.
CORRECTION
We arereminded that our officer in Malawi, Captain Ted Horwood, was born on February 1, not February 21 as our list proclaimed. Our overseas officers are so much encouraged by letters and cards. Don’t forget their special occasions!
