With certainty I can tell you that the West never slows down. Ours is a territory that is constantly on the move. This is true with regard to our people, our programs and the possibilities that shape our future.

I am excited about where we are headed and am greatly encouraged by the sensitivity of God’s people to his claim on their lives, whether soldiers, cadets or officers, or simply people who support and enable the Army’s work. Hopefully this edition of Frontlines will encourage your own response.

PRISON WORK HONORED

Major Kurt Burger, Cascade divisional commander, recently was informed by the Multnomah Sheriff’s Department that The Salvation Army’s Correctional Service Office has been awarded the “Letter of Commendation” for its annual donation of Christmas cards and candy packages to inmates in the county jails.

Obviously Major Leonard Blix, Cascade’s Correctional Services Officer, is doing an outstanding job, and he is highly respected among law enforcement personnel.

SUPER RINGER

Captains Emmanuel and Laura Henry-John (Victor Valley Corps) will have to spring for a new kettle bell next year. Kiwanis Club member Gene Selig has won the trophy three straight years. Standing in front of the Target Store on Palmdale Avenue in Victorville, with the help of Henry Miller, he raised almost $800 in just one day. Then, winning a challenge to the Hesperia Kiwanis brought in $100 more. “We’ll win it next year, too!” says Selig with confidence.

HAWKS ON THE BALL!

Brittney and Lincoln Hawk, children of Captains Guy and Denise Hawk at the Riverside Corps, have distinguished themselves at Riverside Christian School. Brittney has been elected vice president of her school and named to all-league basketball. Lincoln was named most valuable player in basketball. Congratulations on these all-around achievements!

HAWAII RECOGNITION

As part of the activities held in celebration of National Salvation Army Week, the Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division held a community recognition breakfast reception at the Governor’s Mansion.

Two hundred guests and Hawaii’s First Lady Vicky Cayetanos were present at the event, hosted by the Honolulu Advisory Board. The “Others” Award was presented to Women In Construction for their tireless efforts over the last three years with the renovation at Family Treatment Services.

Appreciation Awards went to the University of Hawaii Mortar Board Hui Po-okele Chapter, and the Rotary Clubs of Metropolitan Honolulu, Waikiki and Honolulu. Receiving Partners in Service Awards were GTE Wireless and Hawaii Dodge Dealers. The 1998 Media Award went to CBS affiliate KGMB-9 and the Volunteer Appreciation Award to Mr. Stephen Murin.

TORNADO RELIEF

The Salvation Army in Denver collected donated items for the people in Spencer, S. Dak., the town all but obliterated by a recent tornado. Hot meals, counseling and shelter were provided the victims and relief crews. Staff and volunteers also visited tornado victims in the hospital and solicited donations to help with memorial services.

SUPER CUBMASTER

Congratulations to Envoy Paul Basso, who has been named Cubmaster of the Year in the Douglas Fir District, Roseburg, Ore. This pack began at zero back in October, and in nine months has become one of the strongest in the district. His enthusiasm for Scouting is exceptional, and it shows in the faces of the boys, says Roseburg Corps Officer Captain Ron Wildman. Basso also serves his local troop as Scoutmaster.
