This afternoon I am looking out of my office window and enjoying the evidence of springtime–bright flowers, a blue sunny sky and a gentle breeze. Isn’t God terrific? Just when I am thinking that the El Ni–o winter will never end, God pulls out all of the stops and really blesses me.

The good things that are happening in the lives of people throughout the territory are a similar blessing–people are growing in their faith and responsiveness to the one who loves them with perfect love, and we are strengthened and encouraged because of their experience.

Thank you, people of the West, for a job well done!

CHURCH GROWTH AT WORK

Colonel Bill Luttrell tells us that he recently enrolled Linda Madsen, secretary to Divisional Commander Major Harold Brodin, as a Senior soldier. Linda, no kin to the S.A. officer Madsen family, is already busy teaching a literacy class at the Anchorage ARP. She says her class has grown from two to four and is receiving an enthusiastic response. Welcome to the ranks, Linda!

COOKING OFFERS HOPE

Lt. Colonel Jim Sullivan, Clark County Coordinator, reports they are working with the Community College of Southern Nevada to provide training and job placement for clients in their homeless services. They are currently in their third training group and are experiencing great success in the program. Las Vegas has a large number of culinary jobs, and they see a good future here.

Though the ARP has the usual internal work therapy, this is their first formal training and job placement program. Fourteen formerly homeless men are now completing the course.

BELLINGHAM H. L. HONORED

Major Judy Goodwin, Bellingham, Wash., corps officer, says their Home League has just been earned the National Goals award. This was for their work in attendance, number of meetings held, and projects achieved. In addition, 18 members had perfect attendance this past year and received their Honorama pins. Keep up the good work!

“TEENS ON CALL”

This is a work program at Kahului, Maui Corps that teaches high-risk teens work skills and then refers them to potential employers. Youth are recruited from community service programs or off the streets. Some are gang members or have served time. Brian McCafferty, program coordinator, who began the work, stayed with the program as it became part of Maui Economic Opportunity, a non-profit agency. There are currently 200 youth enrolled in the program.

LONG BEACH PLANS RECOGNITION DINNER

Long Beach Temple Corps (Majors James and Sallyann Hood) is preparing for its 1998 Advisory Board recognition dinner, which recognizes volunteers who have contributed to the Army’s Long Beach work during the past year.

SUPPORT APPRECIATED

We understand that Lt. Colonel William Hunter, secretary for program, USA Eastern Territory, is undergoing treatment for cancer. PRAY FOR DANNY RAMOS

We have received an urgent prayer request for Danny Ramos, 22-year-old son of Majors Hector and Gerde Ramos (corps officers, San Francisco Mission Corps, Calif.)

Danny has been in the California Pacific Medical Center three times in the past 10 weeks for heart-related problems. If the right combination of medications cannot be found once he is removed from intravenous medication, he will have to remain hospitalized until a donor heart is found. The Ramos’ are pleading for the prayers of their fellow believers that God’s will be done. Please pray for Danny, for the family, and for his doctor, Dr. Ernest Haeusslein. Messages of encouragement and assurance of prayer can be sent to the Ramos family at 164 Marbly Ave., Daly City CA 94015-2725.

HEARTFELT THANKS

Commissioner Fred Ruth and Mrs. Louise Otto wish to express their deep appreciation for all the messages and tributes received in connection with the promotion to Glory of their mother, retired Corps Sergeant-Major Mrs. Annie Ruth of the USA Southern Territory.
