Kahului helps kids, homeless
Mark Merritt, Kahului, Maui corps officer, reports the Baldwin Foundation awarded the corps a grant for its after school program, enabling them to purchase eight laptop computers, software and printers to set up an after school tutoring/study center for their youth. In addition, the BEDS (Booth Emergency Drop-in Shelter) has expanded to 20 beds per night and is now funded by a grant from the Hawaii State Department of Housing and Human Concerns and a T.L. Williams grant. In the past year, more than 10 men found permanent employment and housing due to the assistance given to them through the BEDS ministry.

Southwest women reach out
Ministry is a priority with Southwest Division women: in the last quarter, 26 Women’s Ministry members enrolled as senior soldiers, 40 became adherents, and 87 families linked to the corps through Women’s Ministries. Lt. Colonel Rhode Danielson is divisional Women’s Ministries secretary.

In Pahrump, Nev., Women’s Ministries has an outreach at the local Social Security office, which is only open certain days of the month. On the last Tuesday of each month, a group of Salvation Army women, who wear their Women’s Ministries shirts with their outfits, provide coffee and doughnuts as people wait in the long lines at the office. Captains Dionisio and Arlene Torres are corps officers.

AAYBC celebrates Chinese New Year
Salvationists and friends at the San Francisco Asian American Yerba Buena Corps (AAYBC) celebrated the Chinese New Year with a special testimony from Lt. Colonel Check Yee , O.F., and a Chinese song by the AAYBC children. Yee, who left China when he was 20 years old, served as corps officer of the San Francisco Chinatown Corps for his entire career prior to his retirement.

Cross earns degree
Captain Nigel Cross, College for Officer Training director of personnel, has earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. Congratulations, Captain!

Salem Kroc Center
Guest speakers, life changing workshops and over 40 vendors, door prizes, a drawing for a free cruise and more were all part of a free Health and Wellness Expo held recently at the Salem Kroc Center, Ore. Marion/Polk County Coordinator Major Jerry Ames and Kroc Administrator Major Donna Ames report 1,000 attended the event.
