Oceanside women reach out
Sierra Del Mar Divisional Women’s Ministries Secretary Major Cindy Dickinson reports the Oceanside, Calif., corps’ women’s ministries are continuing to grow under the leadership of Captain Hilary Patterson. A new mom’s Bible study group, created through accepted candidate Caroline Rowe, reaches out to Marine wives with preschool children. Since March 2009, the six women in the weight loss group—who journal, memorize scripture, and exercise—have lost 70 pounds between them.

Detox celebrates 2nd birthday
The Salvation Army celebrated the two-year anniversary of the reopening of its detoxification center, located on the grounds of the San Francisco Harbor Light Center. In that time the unit has served almost 1,000 people. About 90% have gone onto programs at the Harbor Light or other facilities for longer treatment. “People are given a second chance at life,” said Captain Martin Cooper, Harbor Light administrator. “It’s a chance for chemically-dependent people to move from the cardboard box into a loving and caring recovery program.” The Harbor Light Center has provided critical substance abuse services for men and women since 1941, and is one of just two residential detoxification programs in the city.

Warming up Polar Bear jumpers
Alaska Divisional Commander Major Doug Tollerud and Divisional Secretary Captain Daniel Freeman recently went to the community of Seward for the annual Polar Bear Jump to benefit the American Cancer Society. The Salvation Army provided fresh doughnuts and hot chocolate to the jumpers who braved the chilly waters of Resurrection Bay, and to those who braved the chilly day to be supportive. In all they served about 24 dozen doughnuts and 275 cups of cocoa and coffee.

Army responds to Boulder crash
Sherry Manson, Intermountain divisional emergency disaster services director, reports the Boulder, Colo., sheriff’s department asked The Salvation Army to respond to the site of a mid-air plane collision/crash which resulted in three fatalities. “We immediately distributed cold sandwiches and fruit prepared by the Boulder County jail to the search and rescue teams to take with them to the crash sites,” said Manson. Coffee, cold drinks and snacks were provided to 100-plus law enforcement, fire and rescue, National Transportation Safety Board, FAA and media. Emotional and spiritual care team members spoke with first responders who had been at the crash site.
