Prayer chain unites Salvationists
More than 100 requests were placed in the prayer box at the So. Calif. Divisional Latino Family Camp this summer; this fall, recognizing the importance of prayer in uniting the Latino corps, Majors Antonio and Aide Horta, So. Calif. Divisional Latino Coordinators initiated a prayer chain that involved up to seven corps and from 250-320 praying soldiers at each meeting.

Meeting on Fridays, the prayer chain started in the East Los Angeles Corps with Majors Hector and Ana Diaz, then went to the San Pedro Corps with Captains Alexis and Vera Villanea; it next went to the Anaheim Temple Corps, with Captains Salvador and Gloribel Gonzalez and then went to the Santa Ana Temple with Captains Lex and Patricia Giron. The final prayer chain meeting was held at the Los Angeles Central Corps, with Majors Antonio and Aide Horta.

Southwest welcomes soldiers
The Army continues to grow in the Southwest Division: 29 junior soldiers were recently enrolled at the Phoenix South Mountain Corps, while the Tuscon Amphi Corps enrolled 11 senior soldiers and two adherents, and commissioned eight local officers.

Alaska rings bells
This year, Anchorage’s Season of Giving lunch was a resounding success, with nearly 500 in attendance to help launch the Red Kettle Campaign. During the five-minute bell ringing competition, local “celebrity” bell ringers collected more than $108,000. For the second year in a row, Nick Pepperworth, with Udelhoven Oilfield System Services, was the top celebrity, filling four tables, which resulted in almost $20,000 in contributions to fill his red kettle.

Railton Place welcomes youth
Railton Place, adjacent to the new Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, recently welcomed 30 “aged out” foster youth into its housing facility, where each moved into their own completely furnished studio apartment. All have access to onsite program support services including the Emancipation fund, a mandatory savings account that each month adds half of the $200 rent and the Army contributes $50 to help the individual following the completion of the two-year program.

Women respond to God
Nearly 300 women attended the inspirational and informative 2008 So. Calif. Women’s Ministry retreat. Under the leadership of Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries, Major Rose-Marie Leslie, the weekend included workshops, special music and drama by Carol Jaudes, Eastern Territory special events & creative arts director and Karen Krinjak. Capt. Jaonne Louangamath led a time of praise and worship. A grand total of $2,248 was raised for the territorial project, helping the children of Kenya.
