Williams, Alaska recognized
Alan Williams, a longtime member of the Anchorage Advisory Board and the Anchorage Corps, was recognized for his help in making many of Alaska’s Native Corporations attain financial success through his work with the National Cooperative Bank. A 16-foot totem pole, made by master artist Nathan Jackson, was placed inside the Alaska Native Heritage Center’s Welcome House in his honor.

The Anchorage Daily News recognized The Salvation Army as one of Alaska’s best non-profits in the recent “Best of Alaska” poll. This year, the Army was recognized at the Gold level; it is the second year for the non-profit category and the second year the Army has been recognized in this fashion.

Hawaii hosts women
“Pursing” was the theme of this year’s divisional women’s ministries camp, attended by over 125 women who gathered at Camp Homelani as they pursued God’s purpose for their lives. The week was filled with fellowship, worship, education, service and fun, as the women grew in their experiences with the Lord—and enjoyed the theme of purses. Majors Kelly Pontsler and Harryette Raihl were special guests.

So. Calif ‘fans the flame’
One hundred thirty people attended the Southern California Division’s young adult retreat, held recently at the Thousand Pines Conference Center in Crestline, Calif. Pastor Ben Stephens from West Angeles Church spoke on the theme “Fan the Flame.” A comedian and Latin dance instructor provided entertainment. Anna Phrasarath, divisional progressive arts & young adult ministries coordinator, organized the retreat; Erick Rodriguez, territorial headquarters youth department staff, led worship.

Divisional bowling teams gear up
Jim Sparks, territorial youth development and leadership director, reports that eight of the territory’s 10 divisions are involved in the territorial bowling league. “We have 162 bowlers, who range in age from teens on up,” says Sparks. Current results for The Salvation Army Bowling Association 2008 league standing are posted on the territorial bulletin board.

Northwest Division: Captains Francisco & Irma Flores—corps officers, Yakima Temple Corps, WA, with additional responsibility for Granview (RiverValley) Corps, effective: November 19, 2008; Sierra Del Mar Division: Major Patti Brooks—divisional social services consultant, effective: November 5, 2008; So. Calif. Division: Captains Will & Christy Ware—corps, Whittier Corps, effective: October 1, 2008.
