Greeley’s hot dog days
The Salvation Army gave away 300 free hot dogs recently at a Wal-Mart in Greeley, Colo., as part of a plan to increase community awareness. Using the emergency disaster services (EDS) trailer for preparation, corps officers, volunteers and staff from the corps and child development center handed out the hot dogs.
Staff and volunteers told shoppers about the corps’ many programs and distributed pamphlets. As a result, 15 new youth registered for their young people’s programs. “It was a fun day,” stated Corps Officer Captain Robert Sproule. “No purchase was necessary to get a free hot dog, but you had to be present to eat,” he added, with tongue—and hot dog—firmly planted in cheek.

Oxnard recognizes volunteers
Nineteen volunteer doctors were among those recognized by the Oxnard/Port Hueneme Corps at its fifth annual award dinner; the doctors work at the corps’ free dental and medical clinic. Also honored was Lisa Guerrero (Difference Maker 2008) who, along with her husband former Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Erickson, will head the corps’ Lisa Guerrero Ocean View Golf Classic in September 2008. Guerrero is the granddaughter of Raul Guerrero, O.F.

EDS gives aid
Throughout the Western Territory, the Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) provides critical assistance to those in need. In Denver, Colo., the Salvation Army’s Metro Denver Emergency Disaster Services mobile kitchen fed the first responders and emergency personnel in response to the unknown white substance found at a federal building in downtown Denver, and also provided clothing for two men who work in the building whose clothing were contaminated by the white powder. Three persons from the emotional spiritual care team talked with the persons who work in the building.

Colonel Mervyn Morelock, territorial prayer coordinator, reports the West’s Call to Prayer website has been updated, with links to both requests for prayer and a praise page that provides praise for answered prayer.
