Preventing child abuse
April is Child Abuse Prevention month—and this year, the Western Territory started the month of April with a visit from Dean Juster, the United Kingdom-THQ Child Safety Director. During Dean’s weeklong visit to the West, he networked with the child safety office and visited programs to review the safety practices in place for the protection of minors and the elderly, reports Western Territory Child/Vulnerable Adult Safety Consultant Anne Calvo, RN.

Pendleton enrolls 20
The Pendleton, Ore., corps, under the leadership of Corps Officers Majors Don and Martha Sheppard, recently added 14 soldiers and six adherents to their rolls. Cascade divisional leaders Majors Don and Arvilla Hostetler enrolled the new soldiers, adherents, and new Corps Sergeant Major Kelly Whitley. Seniors featured in Sing Tao
The February 13, 2008 issue of the Sing Tao Chinese newspaper featured the Senior Activity Center’s annual Chinese New Year celebration held on February 12, with over 150 in attendance. Monesa Fong, the center’s director, led the entertainment program including songs by the Chinese choir of San Francisco, and the Zhu Wu Club performing various styles of martial arts and lion dance. The center is part of the San Francisco Asian American Yerba Buena Corps, under the leadership of Corps Officers Majors Ron and Keilah Toy.

Purvis models Silvercrest
The Santa Rosa, Calif., Silvercrest recently had a reception to unveil a model, made by Silvercrest resident Stuart Purvis, of a one-bedroom Silvercrest apartment. “It took him just one month to make this scale model,” reported Assistant Property manager Chris Welling. “Mr. Purvis has made many models of ships, and was a yard manager for a yacht-making company in Hong Kong for over 25 years. He has lived at the Silvercrest for 12 years, and continues to make model ships and yachts.”

Happy Birthday, Commissioner Smith!
Commissioner Wilma Smith celebrated her 90th birthday on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The Torrance, Calif., corps honored her with a special time of refreshment and fellowship on March 16, after the Sunday morning meeting. Commissioner Smith and her husband, Commissioner Lawrence Smith, were Western territorial leaders from 1980-82.
