Psalmfest helps others
Twenty songsters from the Torrance, Calif., corps participated in PsalmFestX, an interfaith celebration in song held recently at Temple Beth El in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The songsters, under the direction of Songster Leader Major Kelly Pontsler, joined with seven other choirs to benefit Centro Shalom and the Harbor Interfaith Shelter.

Hawaii honors volunteers, partners
The Salvation Army honored outstanding community partners and volunteers recently at an awards banquet in Honolulu. Architects Hawai‘i Ltd. received the community partner award for its pro bono work in the design of the transitional housing of the Family Treatment Services (FTS). Volunteers honored were Beatrice Lindsey, 83, who, for the past three years, has been ringing the bell at her red kettle post nine hours a day, six days a week; Kilohana Silve, who has started a hula halau made up of recovering women at FTS; and Steven Yoshimura, who has led hundreds of students to be involved as bell ringers and volunteers for the Army’s Angel Tree program. Captain Jonathan Harvey, Yuma, Ariz., County Coordinator, was keynote speaker. KGMB News’ Stacy Loe hosted the event.

ICO delegates slated
Captain Peter Kim, San Francisco Korean corps officer, attended the International College for Officers (ICO) Session 196, January 9 – March 3, 2008. Major Cindy Foley, CFOT special projects, will attend Session 197, April 9 – June 3, 2008, and Major George Baker, Intermountain divisional secretary, will attend Session 198, July 16 – September 8, 2008.

Redding shows appreciation
The Redding, Calif., corps thanked volunteers and honored guests for their hard work and service to the Army at Christmas and all year long. The United Bikers of Northern California, who raised thousands of toys through the Biker Toy Run, were named Volunteers of the Year. The reporting team from KRCR Channel 7, who reported numerous stories on behalf of the Redding Salvation Army all year long, accepted an award; Bell Ringer of the Year went to Dave Clapper, and the Club of the Year was the Elks Club. Woodland opens doors
When yet another storm drenched Northern California, the Woodland, Calif., Outpost opened its doors to feed the community. As the storm continued, more than 40 homeless came in to have a hot meal. Once the building was filled, “We had to put up temporary shelter in the back parking lot,” said John Kilcoyne, whose team of volunteers handled the effort. Lunch consisted of traditional rainy day comfort foods, grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza and coffee. A worship service and sermon followed.
