Banner ads on national websites
National Headquarters has authorized the commencement of a Salvation Army online holiday banner campaign during the weeks leading up to Christmas and the New Year with a number of media outlets. Current placements are on AOL, CNN and ABC News; the rest will go into rotation the Monday after Thanksgiving, including FoxNews.com and MSN.com. At AmericanGreetings.com, the site will post a card for people to send during the holidays, with a call-to-action at the “end” of the card for people to learn more about The Salvation Army and donate online.

Chris Mallett Memorial Concert
The Torrance, Calif. corps recently held the sixth annual Chris Mallett Memorial Concert, featuring the corps’ musical groups: Torrance band and songsters, singing company, beginners’ and junior band. Guest conductor was Chris Mallett’s brother, Bandmaster David Mallett of Portsmouth, England.
Special guests were vocalists Matt Woods (Pasadena Tabernacle) and Carmen Ross (Compton), and guitarist Fabio (Redondo Beach). A total of $618 was raised to provide a scholarship to the Southern California divisional School of Music. This year’s recipient is 12-year-old Greg Duran, a cornet player in the junior band and a singing company member.

Esperenza fire assistance
Salvation Army officers Captains Gerald Pigeon and Susan Gibson offered spiritual support and comfort, as well as food and water, to firefighters at the Esperanza fire in Riverside County, Calif. Five firefighters were killed by flames while battling the blaze. A Salvation Army mobile feeding unit also provided food, snacks, and other items to support the firefighters.

Shotzberger speaks in Reno
Major Molly Shotzberger was the keynote speaker at the Reno, Nev., corps’ Annual Dinner and Christmas Kettle Kick-off on November 16 at the Peppermill Hotel. Shotzberger, who was chaplaincy training director and volunteer director at national headquarters before retiring this summer, will share her front-line experiences after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and after Hurricane Katrina. She also headed the counseling team after TWA Flight 800 crashed on Long Island, NY, on July 18, 1996.

Major Sheryl Tollerud, Alaska Division director of Women’s Ministries, will attend the International College for Officers (ICO) Session 192 from January 10 – March 5, 2007.
