Marshall Islands: “simple ministry”
Captain Martin Cooper, Marshall Islands coordinator, reports a local Army unit on an outer island has started a Friday night food and movie program. On the first night 65 youth attended and six accepted Christ. “I call this simple ministry,” said Cooper, because we sometimes look for the big money, earth-changing super programs, but it’s always the simple peanut butter and jelly that works in the end.” Captain Nancy Cooper serves as Marshall Islands leadership training center director.

Wrangell adds to ranks
The Wrangell, Alaska corps recently enrolled 10 new junior soldiers. “These are the first new junior soldiers at that corps in some time,” said Divisional Youth Secretary Captain Timothy Smith. “The corps averages around 25 people on Sundays, in a town of 2,300 people.” Lts. Wayne and Ida Cowan are in-charge.

Cerritos Concert raises funds
The “Don Felder and Friends Rock Cerritos for Katrina” concert, held in early February at the Cerritos (Calif.) Center for the Performing Arts successfully raised more than $150,000, which was donated to The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. The City of Cerritos and East West Bank were event co-sponsors.

San Bernardino celebrates Valentine’s Day
A Valentine’s party, attended by 94 people, was held at the San Bernardino Corps, Calif., for the mentally challenged group. Gift bags were distributed and auxiliary members assisted with making crafts. “Auxiliary chair Julia Bogany made a valentine card for all; Noni Axe decorated chocolate chip cookies with hearts,” said Corps Officer Major Jacque Fritz. “George, our volunteer, packed the gift bags. Everyone pitched in to cover the tables with newspaper, set up supplies and see everyone had what they needed for the craft. Mike Remmington, who has volunteered for four years, gave out the cookies.”

National Council on the Aging conference
The 2006 National Council on the Aging conference —the most comprehensive educational and networking event covering all aspects of aging—will be held March 16-19, in Anaheim, Calif., reports Major Steve Bradley, territorial education secretary.
