Ministry of hospitality
Don Mowery, Jr., resident director, Camps Mt. Crags and Gilmore, reports during the recent fires in Southern California, “We had a local fire department chief, whom we have known for many years, knock on our door around 9 p.m. and ask if we could house 25 fire fighters overnight. We gave them a place to stay, and a late night snack…they left early the next morning to hit the hills again.” Housing was provided for the fire fighters throughout the weekend.

Army aids Majuro hospital
The Salvation Army sent relief to the only hospital in Majuro, Marshall Islands, which incurred major damage as a result of an electrical fire. The fire destroyed the hospital’s laundry room, containing all its bedding materials, as well as a six month supply of medical provisions. A container load of bedding donated by the Sheraton Hotel and Ala Moana Hotel was shipped by the Army to replace the essential items.

Capt. Martin Cooper, Marshall Islands coordinator, notes that the fire displaced more than 100 hospital patients, who were in dire need of these essential materials and supplies.

Sloans receive award
The Glendale, Calif., Bar Association bestowed its annual Liberty Bell Award on Captains James and Barbara Sloan, Glendale corps officers; it was the first time in its 35-year history that the award was given to a couple. Sponsored by the American Bar Association, the award is presented to an individual who has done the most to further good government and respect for the law. “The Glendale Bar Association Trustees unanimously chose both Jim and Barbara for their work helping the homeless and the addicted, as well as providing after school programs for at-risk children,” said Glendale Advisory Board member Eric Ashton.

Boosters support Sacramento ARC
Captain Grady Brown, Sacramento ARC administrator, reports that 60 John F. Kennedy High School Booster Club members brought hundreds of donation bags full of clothing to help support the ARC. The football team, cheerleader squad, and booster club all collected items. “Athletic Director Dave Parsh, Head Coach Jared Brown, Cheerleader Advisor Terri Mack, and Booster Club President Becky Matt are all interested in their students’ community involvement,” said Brown. The clothing was given to provide resources for the 96 men enrolled in the Sacramento ARC who are working diligently on their recovery.

Northwest Parkway assists TSA
Colorado’s Northwest Parkway Public Highway Authority presented Intermountain Divisional Headquarters with a $10,000 check to assist hurricane survivors who have been relocated to the Colorado Community College facility in the Lowry Redevelopment Area. Toll road drivers contributed $5,000 from roadside donation collection points and the Northwest Parkway Public Highway Authority matched the total donations to create the $10,000 gift.
