Colorado honors volunteers
The Colorado Springs Corps honored their volunteers recently with a volunteer appreciation reception. Tim Leigh, owner of Hoff & Leigh Real Estate, was inducted into the “Order of the Red Apron.” Leigh has been on the El Paso County advisory board for three years. Lon Matejcyck, publisher of the Colorado Springs Business Journal, was granted the Volunteer of the Year award. Many thanks for your support!

Santa Maria spiffs up
Volunteers are making a difference at the Santa Maria, Calif., corps, report Sylvia Cannon and Coleen Cannon. “This is a very old church, but we now have new chairs, new carpet and a beautiful new kitchen for Fred—a wonderful chef who has retired from world class restaurants…and makes good food for the homeless.”

JUNEAU CELEBRATES SPRING
The Juneau, Alaska Women’s Auxiliary hosted its annual Strawberry Luncheon and Fashion Show recently. Proceeds from this popular event primarily benefit the Juneau Corps’ summer camp scholarship program. This year, 10 scholarships will be awarded.

Each year, Jeff Brown, a local radio personality, delights the crowd with his unique costume—this year, he dressed as a garden; Juneau Mayor Bruce Bothello modeled clothing donated to the Juneau Thrift Store. Said Juneau Corps Officer Major Nila Fankhauser, “This event is a great success because of the wonderful ladies of the Auxiliary.”

Greeley cares for kids
Karen Hansen, director of the Army’s early childhood center in Greeley, Colorado, says “Our children are working on the theme of ‘Vacations in the USA.’ Most of them come from low income families, so they never get to go on vacations to different states—we have requested visitor information from most all 50 states and will be mapping out a route for our pretend vacation.”

Jazz icon teaches at Red Shield
The Denver Red Shield has started a beginner’s band, thanks to Sam Bivens, president of the Denver Jazz Society and leader of the Denver Jazz Orchestra. Bivens has played with Dizzy Gilespie, Ray Charles, Louie Armstrong and others; a volunteer at the Red Shield, he teaches young and old alike to play brass instruments as well as the piano and electric keyboard—at no charge—every Wednesday night from 5 to 6. Currently, 15 students are enrolled.

Strawberry Field closed
Strawberry Field, the Salvation Army children’s home made famous by the Beatles in their 1967 song, “Strawberry Fields Forever,” shut its doors recently. The facility was closed due to the Army’s emphasis now of placing children in foster homes or small sites. John Lennon left money to Strawberry Field in his will and Yoko Ono, his widow, donated $70,000 in 1984 to keep the home open.
