Kids contribute for tsunami relief
On May 6, the Vallejo Corps, Calif., received a check for $2,261 for its ongoing tsunami relief efforts. Wardlaw Elementary School raised the money as a part of their annual Penny Power program. The total amount raised was $4,521, which was shared with the Army and Habitat For Humanity. The check was presented to divisional headquarters by Captains Tom and Kim Stambaugh, corps officers, and Sarah Bentley, Del Oro Divisional Headquarters.

Colorado Women’s Auxiliary: helping is in fashion
The Colorado Springs Women’s Auxiliary presented Helping Is Always Fashionable recently at the Sheraton Hotel. This was the group’s fifth installment of the annual fashion show and luncheon, which raises funds aiding children of low-income families. Georgiann Lymberopoulos of News 5/30 hosted the event, which modeled spring and summer fashions from Dillard’s.

Archstone helps families
The Archstone Foundation, a philanthropic leader committed to addressing the issues of older Americans, awarded the Torrance Adult Day Care Center and the San Pedro Adult Day Care Center (Sage House), California, with $30,000 in scholarship funding for families, to be split equally between the two centers.

“This generous donation allows us to have more scholarships available for more seniors and to give families the opportunity to have their loved one attend the center more often,” said Major Paul Seiler, So. Calif. divisional commander. Both Centers serve low-income seniors ages 65 years and older who may suffer one or more physical, mental, or social limitations, all requiring individualized care and attention.

Moore Street celebrates neighborhood
The Portland Moore Street Corps, Ore., recently held it’s 9th Annual Neighborhood Pride Banquet to celebrate the achievements of individuals, businesses, organizations and others who have brought pride to themselves and to the neighborhood. Nearly 300 people gathered; Marco Shaw, owner of Fife Restaurant, donated the dinner. Honorees included: Bruce Burns, Dave and Leslie Johnson, Marco Shaw, Tony Hopson, Billy Ladd Jr., Ron Leland, Darren Cooper, and Cory Martinez. Jerry Moss, of the Portland Trailblazers, served as MC, Captain Donna Marshall offered the invocation and Captain Robert Marshall concluded the evening with a vocal solo, “To God Be The Glory.”

Stockton ARC honored
The Forty-Niner chapter of the California Probation, Parole & Correction Association recently honored the Stockton, Calif., ARC as the Service Provider of the Year. When Neil Van Ruiten, deputy probation officer for Stanislaus County, made the presentation he noted some of the ARC’s success stories and expressed his personal preferences for The Salvation Army program. Majors Del and Vicki Brockelman were thrilled to accept the award, and were accompanied by Scott Roberts, director of rehabilitation and Claudie Roberts, director of retail.
