The Message

Jackson honored
Captain Kevin Jackson, curriculum officer and museum director, was selected as the first honoree from Crestmont College to receive the Claude E. Norcross Educator of the Year Award. The award is given to teachers from educational institutions on the Palos Verdes Peninsula who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. He was honored at an awards dinner sponsored by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Palos Verdes Peninsula.

LA Sparks teach kids
Recently, Tamecka Dixon from the Los
Angeles Sparks basketball team hosted a reading workshop at The Salvation Army South Los Angeles Center for Worship and Service. The purpose of the workshop was to encourage reading and scholarship along with athleticism.

Linkletter supports Army
Art Linkletter, 92, TV icon and three-time Emmy Award winner, was guest speaker at the Tucson, Ariz., Salvation Army annual awards dinner. Attended by more than 250, the dinner celebrated the Army’s 111 years of service in the city. The Army’s new hospitality house plans were unveiled at the event by Swaim and Associates, Ltd.

Denver Metro steps out
The Front Range Band sounded the “battle cry” and more than 150 members of the Denver Red Shield Citadel, West Adams, and Aurora Corps, supported by DHQ staff, stepped off to the tune of Onward Christian Soldiers. For the first time in recent history The Salvation Army, Guard, Sunbeams, Adventure Corps and Amercian flags were unfurled on the streets of Denver in a march of witness celebrating the many programs offered by The Salvation Army Metro Denver.
The Red Shield’s Tang-So-Doo Karate, boxing, football, and Colorado Starlites joined with corps cadets, Sunbeams, Adventure Corps programs and soldiers and adherents in a 1.5 mile parade. Lt. Colonels Harold and Joann Brodin, divisional leaders, led the march. Soldiers witnessed and handed out more than 500 flyers announcing the weekly schedule of Salvation Army programs in the neighborhood.

Fritz Coleman hosts golf classic
NBC4 weathercaster Fritz Coleman hosted his 10th annual Fritz Coleman Fair Weather Golf Classic at the Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake, Calif. The event included a golf classic, reception, silent auction, dinner and night of comedy with “Fritz & Friends!” All proceeds benefited The Salvation Army.

San Diego’s Bikes for Kids
Each week, Bikes for Kids, a partnership of San Diego’s NBC Channel 7/39 and The Salvation Army, recognizes an outstanding child between ages 6-12 from a San Diego County elementary school.
One day each week, NBC 7/39’s weathercaster Whitney Southwick rides into a classroom on a new bicycle, and presents it to the child along with a helmet and lock. An Army officer gives the child a certificate of recognition and then the officer and Southwick talk to the class about why the child was chosen, bike safety and the importance of a positive attitude.
