A helping hand
Due to challenges facing families with members serving in the military in the Middle East, the Cascade Division has initiated a “Home Front War Relief” program to support military families with financial help to meet basic needs; it provides financial assistance of up to $1,000 per military family to help meet expenses including rent and/or mortgage payments, utilities, transportation, child care and groceries. In coordination with the Oregon Army National Guard, the program has helped more than 100 Oregon families.

Six hundred children received backpacks stuffed with school supplies and a Salvation Army thrift store voucher to shop for back-to-school supplies through the Torrance Corps, Calif. in conjunction with its His House ministry. Now in its 13th year, Operation Backpack provides more than 1,000 backpacks annually to needy school children in the South Bay.

After the fires
According to Ken Cavallero, Del Oro emergency disaster services coordinator, The Salvation Army responded to recent Northern California wildfires with disaster assistance that included providing victims and relief workers with more than 750 meals; offering counseling services, and helping victims sift through ashes of their destroyed homes in search of belongings. Home Depot in Redding provided shovels and rakes, as well as sifters constructed by employees. One Home Depo employee/volunteer, Roger Ames, also had his home destroyed by the fires. Over 12,000 acres were burned, with damages exceeding $8.48 million.

West teams with South
Western Territory Emergency Disaster Services Coordinator Tom McSherry reports that the West has sent four people to assist with communications operations in hurricane-ravaged Florida: Kristin Mahr and Misty Millhorn, Southwest Division, are serving as public information officers; Jon Wallace, Intermountain Division, and Joye Storey, Golden State Division, are assisting as liaison officers (one at the state emergency operations center, and one at the FEMA disaster field office).
