Puyallup women reach out
The Puyallup Valley, Wash., Corps’ Women’s Auxiliary recently had a tea in which they invited women of the community hoping to interest some in becoming members. “It was held at Silvercrest,” reports Joyce Johnston, “and a member of the auxiliary hosted each table, using her own china; with the spring flowers as centerpieces it made a very nice setting.”

Kerry Yanasak, advisory board chair, provided piano music as people arrived. Sandwiches and sweets were served and the ladies were entertained by two guests soloists and a short video about various auxiliaries in the U.S. Captain Erik Hoogstad, corps officer, talked about the history of The Salvation Army and Major Sylvia Hoogstad spoke of women’s roles in the community.

Golden State holds
women’s conference
More than 200 women attended the recent Women’s Ministries Conference, planned by Divisional Women’s Ministry Secretary Major Rhonda Lloyd. “It was a joy to worship together with diverse cultures and languages,” said Commission-er Linda Bond, who spoke during the conference. “The latter did not become a barrier, thanks to the skill of those who translated for the Spanish and Korean groups.” Numerous women made decisions to meet Christ as personal savior.

ARMY TEAMS UP AT HISPANIC EXPO
The Salvation Army recently participated in the LA Christian Expo 2004—the largest fair of Christian and inspirational products for the Hispanic community. The Southern California Division, with support from Western and Southern Territorial Headquarters, created the Army’s exhibit. Major Fernando Martinez, director of multicultural ministries in the Southern Territory, reported, “We have accomplished our purpose successfully. We shared the various ministries of the Army.” Maria Garcia, Alegria counselor, provided information on this Army ministry to families affected by HIV/AIDS. Captains Antonio and Aide Horta, Los Angeles Central Corps, represented the corps and corps officers. Other participants—from Southern California DHQ—included Secretary for Latino Programs Major Mario Reyes, Pili Martinez, Kamara Sams-Holden and Carla Jackson.

THANK YOU, THELMA
On Sunday, April 25, after 28 years of faithful service as Seattle Temple’s Home League Secretary, Thelma Thornquist, 91, will retire.

Lt. Colonels Don and Debbie Bell will conduct the retirement ceremony, supported by Lt. Colonels Terry and Linda Griffin, and Captain Shawn Posillico. Former Seattle Temple corps officers, including Lt. Colonel Bettie Love, Lt. Colonel Joann Brodin, and Major Svea Malmberg will also be in attendance to pay tribute to Thelma.

New Appointments
The following appointments have recently been announced:
Major Linda Markiewicz is appointed as assistant principal and education director, International College for Officers, UK, effective April 1, 2004.

Captains Ian and Isobel Robinson, Santa Rosa corps officers, are appointed executive director, Peacehaven Nursing Home and Assistant Executive Director, Peacehaven Nursing Home, Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Command, effective March 23, 2004.

Captains Fred and Patty Rasmussen, reaccepted, are appointed Santa Rosa corps officers, effective Feb. 29, 2004.

Captains Ralph and Dianne Jiminez to be trainee in-charge administrator (pro-tem) and director of special services (pro-tem) of the Portland ARC, effective March 1, 2004.

Major Timothy Foley, administrator of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, to take additional responsibility as an adjunct faculty, School for Officer Training, effective March 25, 2004.
