Alaska marches on
Anchorage Advisory Board member Cary Sinnett was recently appointed by Mayor Mark Begich to serve on the Task Force on Homelessness. Sinnett has a special interest in homeless issues, having received services from The Salvation Army when his family was temporarily homeless during his teen years. In addition, he is leading the Army’s fundraising efforts to build the S.A.F.E. Campus in Anchorage. The campus will consolidate five existing programs onto one campus, to include expanded services to homeless families.

Plans are underway for the Alaska Congress, March 10-14. Lts. Ned and Mary Ortiz (Kake) and the Congress planning committee are busy making final preparations to welcome delegates. The Army’s centennial anniversary of service in the community will also be celebrated. Lt. Colonels Donald and Debora Bell will be the featured territorial guests. Other special guests will include Commissioners David and Doreen Edwards, Majors Ray and Virginia Gilman and the NW Divisional brass ensemble group under the direction of B/M Jim Anderson.

Doughnuts for SA week
Would you like to include The Salvation Army Famous Doughnut in your National Salvation Army Week promotion? “We are looking into the possibility of having The Salvation Army Famous Doughnut available on a wholesale basis for National Salvation Army Week [May 10-16],” said Major Joe Posillico, Northwest Division general secretary. “We have received a number of calls and thought this might be a good way to present the product in areas outside of the Northwest Division where the doughnut is not available.”

Major John Webb, Phoenix Herberger Center corps officer, has earned a Master of Arts Degree from Trinity Southwest University College of Archaeology and Biblical History in Albuquerque, New Mex.

San Francisco ARC holds memorable chapel

On their final Wednesday night chapel at San Francisco ARC, Majors Robert and Marilyn Gregory rejoiced at seeing their 600th graduate complete the program in their five and a half years in San Francisco! With the completion of the basic six-month program on February 4, 2004, 602 men and women have graduated from San Francisco ARC since July, 1998. Two graduates, a man and a woman, also received their high school diplomas from Jim Wilson, a high school teacher.

The Gregorys were honored as they enter into retirement, following completion of almost 90 years (combined service) as Salvation Army officers with a beautiful certificate created by Philip Beebe, director of rehabilitation services. (See story on p.2.)

SAROA HOLDS REUNION
Major Charles Olsen, Clearwater Fla., reports the Salvation Army Retired Officers Association (SAROA) will hold its 72nd annual reunion February 27-29, 2004 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Membership in SAROA totals 650 retired officers from the USA and Canada Territories. For information on the reunion, call Major Richard Howell at (727) 669-0751.

San Bernardino cares
The San Bernardino, Calif., Women’s Outreach ladies sent 94 scarves and hats to The Salvation Army in Luskin, Tex., where the temperature hit minus 30 degrees recently, said Corps Officer Major Jacqueline Fritz. “Thank you to Julia Bogany, whose son delivered these for us.”

bon voyage at Pasadena
The Pasadena Tabernacle Youth Chorus, under the leadership of Barbara Allen, will be presenting an exciting “aloha” Bon Voyage Concert at the corps on March 6, 2004 at 7 p.m. prior to the group’s five day ministry tour of Hawaii. Admission is $5.
