Monterey holds Kettle Kickoff
Major Tedd Lowcock, Monterey Peninsula corps officer reports, “We just came back from our 2003 Red Kettle Kickoff held at The Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach. This year, Dina Ruiz Eastwood was with us as a co-anchor of KSBW News, along with Dan Green.

Event Committee Chair Ken White and advisory board members contacted 30 guest hosts, filled their tables with friends, and then in a very frantic seven minutes, raised over $108,000 for the Monterey Peninsula Corps, over $30,000 more than last year’s event.

Las Vegas honors Raihl
When Major William Raihl, Clark County Coordinator in Las Vegas, Nev., was called to serve in Kuwait and Iraq on The Salvation Army’s Iraq relief team, he had no idea that the Las Vegas City Medal of Merit would be presented to him upon his return.

When Raihl returned to Las Vegas, Mayor Oscar Goodman and the City Council asked him to attend a city council meeting. The occasion was to present to him the highest city award, the Citizen’s Medal. Raihl quickly responded by presenting each of the council members with a 250 Iraqi Dinar note.

Goodman stated, “Las Vegas could not have a better person to represent us then Major Raihl. We are all proud of his commitment and sacrifice.”

family day at Knott’s
The Pacoima Temple Corps, Calif., organized a trip to Knott’s Berry Farm with the theme, “A Family Day at Knott’s.” The purpose was to encourage and bring new people to the corps. The bus was provided through a program of the City of Los Angeles, with the assistance of City Council member Mr. Alex Padilla. “This is the first time an event like this has been organized, and by the response, it was a great success,” said Envoy Joaquin Gonzalez.

OAKLAND’S NEWEST MFT
Major Bill Heiselman, Oakland ARC administrator, reports Program Director Heidi McKenzie has recently obtained her Marriage & Family Therapist license.

“With Heidi obtaining her MFT license, it is another well-earned achievement representative of the individual as well as the quality of the program offered at this center for beneficiaries,” said Heiselman.

“As the officers and program staff have worked together here, we have constantly added to the quality of the program, with additions of the fathering project, a nicotine cessation program, three phases of program (six-months, nine-months, and twelve-months), a high school diploma program, a quality spiritual program with volunteers including five corps officers from local corps, and more.”
