Group Crisis Intervention
John Berglund, territorial disaster training coordinator, reports an Emergency Disaster Services National Training Program in Critical Incident Stress Management Training: Basic Group Crisis Intervention will be held November 5-6, 2003, at Camp Redwood Glen in Scotts Valley, CA. The program, funded by The Lilly Endowment, Inc., is open to SA cadets, officers, employees and volunteers. For more information, contact John at 562-491-8345.

Congratulations Oly
Earlier this year, more than 100 supporters gathered to celebrate Oly Tegner’s 85th birthday and thank him for his dedicated service to Pepperdine University and the community. The son of pioneer Salvation Army officers from Sweden, Oly is a long-time member of the Los Angeles Advisory board and is on the board of advisors at Crestmont as well as the museum committee. Another highlight of the evening was the announcement that the Olaf H. Tegner Endowed Scholarship Fund at Pepperdine’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology had reached its one million dollar goal.

SINGLES Life enrichment retreat
Captain Brian Saunders, director of continuing education at Crestmont College, reports a Life Enrichment Retreat for single/singles-again officers, “Celebrating our Life Opportunities,” will be held at Jackson’s Point Conference Center in Ontario, Canada April 18-21, 2004. Speakers for the will include Canada/Bermuda Territorial Commander Comm. M. Christine MacMillan, editor and former missionary Dr. Phyllis Kilbourn, Ph.D, and Major Douglas Hefford, North York Temple corps officer. Annual Health Fair
The Torrance, Calif. corps, led by Captains Ivan and Jennifer Wild, recently held its annual Health Fair. Sponsored by the corps’ Adult Day Care (Director Royalene Fernandez), the event featured health screenings from vision exams to diabetes testing. Area businesses and services set up information booths in the fellowship hall, local musicians and clowns provided entertainment, and lunch was available. More than 530 attended the fair.
While the fair is planned with seniors in mind, it has become a yearly event that people of all ages enjoy. Captain Ivan took advantage of the health screenings, and reported, “The divisional commander will be pleased to hear I’m in good shape; we are happy to provide this great community outreach fair!”

Alaskans volunteer
Over two dozen volunteers from Team Alaska, Chilkoot Charlie’s and other companies in Anchorage gave a day of hard labor to the Booth Memorial Adolescent Treatment Center during the United Way Day of Caring. “The volunteers scrubbed, raked, painted, vacuumed, sanded, swept, and cleaned the facility,” said Major Larry Shiroma, administrator. “Thanks to all for a job well done.”
