Guards, Sunbeams receive awards
Shoshannah Begonia, former Guard and Sunbeam director (now, accepted candidate), named the following as recipients of the Commissioner’s Sunbeam Award—Torrance Corps: Jenna Gleason, Lynda Qualls, Brittany Tangermann; Riverside Corps: Maria Vidal, Kendall Mathews, Sabrina Shipp; Petaluma Corps: Caitlynn Adlard; Fairbanks Corps: Angela Penatac; El Cajon Corps: Heather Wardlow. Three girls from the El Cajon Corps received the General’s Guard Award: Heather Laborte, Laura Foley and Kristen Jones.

Oxnard celebrates a century
Oxnard, Calif., recently celebrated its 100th anniversary as a city. “There was a big celebration, including a parade in which we represented The Salvation Army with a canteen, doughnut girls and a band,” reported Corps Officer Capt. Nancy Halverson, Oxnard/Pt. Hueneme Corps. “The city put together a time capsule to be opened in 50 years. They asked organizations, companies, and groups to contribute to it—The Salvation Army was noted as the only church included.”

San Diego welcomes sailors
Before dawn on July 26, more than 500 family members and friends gathered at the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego to meet loved ones from the USS Boxer. San Diego Centre City Corps Captain Thom Poochigian and local volunteers were on hand to support the families and say “thank you” to the troops. In the process they handed out forty dozen doughnuts, 200 cups of coffee, and hundreds of bottles of water.

Red Shield Enrolls Senior Soldiers and Adherents
Denver Red Shield Corps recently enrolled seven senior soldiers and nine adherents. Congratulations to: Senior soldiers—John Cabello, Nina Solano, Donna Williams, Chang Khoo, Evelyn Murray, Genevieve Medina, Eric Lambert.
Adherents—Rick Brookhouse, David McCue, Boyd Hardaway, Donald Hayward, Marvin Hayes, John Paul Thomason, William Hensley, Arnold McDuffie, and Peggy Hoard.
Major Phil Lum, divisional secretary for business officiated the ceremonies assisted by Corps Officers Envoys Ron and Roberta McKinney.

Helping the hungry grow healthy
The McMinnville, Ore., Corps’ mission for its community garden is to “Help The Hungry Grow Healthy” by providing 15 families the resources (land, water, seed, tools and mentors) to grow their own produce to augment their food supply. Their goal is to help low-income families grow fresh vegetables to provide nutritious food for their families. In addition, each gardener is asked to donate 10% of their harvest back to the corps’ food pantry program so that other families will receive fresh vegetables in their food box from The Salvation Army.

Harbor Light celebrates miracles
The Salvation Army’s Los Angeles Harbor Light Center recently celebrated its 15th Annual Miracle Club Reunion and inducted 29 new members into the club. The Miracle Club is an alumni association made up of graduates of the Harbor Light Center, Safe Harbor and Harmony Hall who have successfully maintained their sobriety for at least two years. NBC4 Weathercaster Fritz Coleman served as guest speaker.

New appointments
Major Paul Seiler, secretary for personnel, recently announced the following appointments: Major Jean Rigney, associate corps officer, El Paso Citadel Corps, Southwest Division, effective October 22, 2003. Lieutenants Nigel and Stacie Cross, corps officers, Santa Barbara Corps, So. Calif. Division, effective August 4, 2003.
