PORTLAND TAB BAND CELEBRATES GOD AND COUNTRY

The Cascade Division’s Portland Tabernacle Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Major Dale Hill, participated in the God and Country Awards Ceremony for the local Boy Scout Council.

The event was held at the First United Methodist Church in Portland, Ore. More than 300 people looked on as 142 Boy Scouts were presented with the prestigious God and Country award.

The Salvation Army’s 22-member band presented 12 songs including the march “God and Country” written by BM William Himes, the anthem “Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart” by Vernon Post, and a song setting of the Irving Berlin classic “God Bless America” as arranged by Hill.

THE DALLES YOUTH PITCH IN

On President’s Day, The Dalles, Ore., thrift store remained open as a fund-raiser for the young people, YP Councils, and other upcoming events of The Dalles Corps. Captain John Tumey and young people from their Living in Faith Eternally group and from the corps worked the store. “It was a success in many ways,” Captain Sabrina Tumey reports. “The kids came together as a body, the store had a big sale and cleaned out the racks, and funds (necessary) were raised.”

ARMY ASSISTS NIGHTCLUB RELIEF

The worst fire in Rhode Island’s history claimed 98 lives and left over 187 injured. Salvation Army canteens were among first responders at the scene shortly after first alarm was turned in. Two mobile units were in place all night and served over 1,000 meals and drinks to disaster workers. Major Robert Pfeiffer and Captain Terry Streck were at the Crowne Plaza Hotel comforting families all morning and early afternoon. The Army assisted with grief counseling on the scene, at the Family Center set up at the Crown Plaza in West Warwick and at the morgue.

HUNTER NAMED EAST’S PERSONNEL SECRETARY

Effective April 1, 2003, Lt. Colonel Barbara Hunter has been appointed Secretary for Personnel in the USA Eastern Territory. Hunter, a Western officer, has been serving as the East’s Assistant Secretary for Personnel.

KEEP MAHR IN PRAYER

Major Ted Mahr, overseas officer serving in India, had surgery last week at the Evangeline Booth Hospital in India. He is now home recuperating, and will not be allowed to travel around India during the month of March. Please pray for a speedy recovery.
