FACES OF CHILDREN PRAYER SUMMIT

Lisa Thompson, The Salvation Army’s national consultant for youth development, will lead a breakout session on prayer for trafficked children in partnership with World Vision. The Summit is a national event and will be held June 11-12, 2003, at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Baroness Caroline Cox, House of Lords, U.K., is honorary chair; keynote speakers include Richard Stearns, president, World Vision, and Dr. Clive Calver, president of World Relief.

SPRINGFIELD’S BIG DAY

The Springfield Corps, Ore., recently had a “big day” that included enrolling two senior soldiers, six adherents, commissioning a Young Peoples Sergeant Major (YPSM), and warranting a League of Mercy Secretary. “The actions of these congregation members were steps of faith and commitment,” said Corps Officer Captain Paul Chouinard. Captain Kenneth Hodder, divisional commander, conducted the service to re-dedicate the extensive building repairs and remodel done last year.

SPOKANE WELCOMES

NEWEST SOLDIERS

The Spokane Corps, Wash., enrolled seven soldiers recently: Austin Anderson, Brandon Carney, Annika Herbes, Andrea Hopkins, Elisha Lafond, Spencer Lowe, and Khouri Potts. Major Ben Markham commissioned the soldiers into The Salvation Army.

HARBOR LIGHT STAYS FIT

As part of its ongoing effort to enhance and expand its residential programs, the San Francisco Harbor Light Center has added an exercise curriculum to its drug and chemical dependence rehabilitation programs. The new state-of-the-art fitness center is open to residents of the Harbor Light Recovery Home.

“The fitness center provides a safe and healthy place to exercise for all program residents,” said Captain Phil Smith, Harbor Light executive director. “We know that physical fitness enhances recovery and we want to make every effort to help our residents grow in physical strength as well as spiritual wellness.”

LINKS HONORS WYLIE

Veronica Wylie, one of Denver Red Shield’s ballet class teachers, was honored by the Denver Chapter of Links, Inc. Links, Inc. is national organization which for the past 20 years has honored black youth with “The Tribute to Black Youth Luncheon.” Wylie, a senior at East High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, maintains a 4.0 grade point average, and is an accomplished ballerina. She was quoted in the Rocky Mountain Daily News as stating that next to school, volunteering as one of the Army’s ballet teachers is the highlight of her week.

LITHOGRAPHS DONATED TO CAMP

An anonymous donor recently gave 163 lithographs to Camp Mt. Crags. Funding for the framework was also donated. Six of the lithographs are from the “Wild Birds of North America” set; most of the prints are signed and dated by the artist. The artwork will be hung in the conference center at the camp, reports divisional leaders Lt. Colonels Alfred and Sherryl Van Cleef.
