SOUTHERN CAL REPORTS

Celebrities at the Celebrity Bell Ringing Day included Fritz Coleman, NBC 4 weathercaster; Stephen Collins of the TV show 7th Heaven; Michelle Phillips, a member of the pop musical group The Mamas and the Papas and now a film and TV actress; Morgan Brittany, of the TV show Dallas; character actor Joseph Campanella; and Paul Petersen, child star known for his role on The Donna Reed Show.

The Salvation Army Band was featured in a special exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of Art during the month of December commemorating the Tournament of Roses through the years. The Southern California Division Music and Development Departments worked together to supply a female mannequin dressed in a Salvation Army Band uniform and several enlarged photographs for the display.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

History has been made in Africa with the first cadets from Rwanda commencing training to become Salvation Army officers. Three couples traveled from Kigali to Brazzaville to join the new training session of the Congo (Brazzaville) Territory.

The Army opened its work in Rwanda in 1994 when it responded to the emergency situation which followed the country’s civil war and resulting genocide. There are now two corps and two societies in the region.

ARC GRAD TO BE ON ESPN

Over the holidays, ESPN taped a show featuring Luis Sharpe, a former NFL pro who now works as men’s manager at the Phoenix ARC. In it, Luis shared the story of his new life in Christ and recovery as a result of the Phoenix ARC program. ESPN picked up the story from an article that ran in a Phoenix newspaper; Kelly Neal and a crew from ESPN in New York taped it at the ARC–the show is slated to be broadcast on Sunday, January 12. Major Glen Doss’ “In Process” column featured a profile on Sharpe in the October 26, 2002 (Volume 20 #18) issue of New Frontier.

Captain Charles S. Fowler, Marshall Islands Coordinator, was awarded his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration: Management and Communication from Western Baptist College. That’s a great accomplishment!

THE WORD FROM DEL ORO

The Sacramento Association of Realtors (SAR) raised more than $100,000 for the Army through their 20th Annual CanTree. As part of the annual tradition, the realtors construct a tree entirely made of canned goods. This year’s tree consisted of close to 100,000 cans and stood over 25 feet tall.

The Sacramento Association of Woodworkers presented The Salvation Army with over 1,200 handmade and hand-painted wooden toys which were constructed during the year.

HARBOR LIGHT GETS VA FUNDING

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded The Salvation Army’s Portland, Oregon, Harbor Light Center a contract under the Veterans Affairs Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program, making the center eligible for up to $236,082 in annual funding for homeless veterans.

“Our military people have helped all of us,” said Major Neal Hogan, Harbor Light director. “Now we are able to extend the Army’s help to them in the Portland area.” The Harbor Light Center serves more than 2,000 people each year, 250 of them children.
