OLYMPIA TOY RUN

More than 6,800 bikers from throughout the state of Washington participated in the 25th Annual Olympia Toy Run–the largest showing in the event’s history. The Salvation Army had two kettles at Heritage Park, the end-point of the run. According to reports, the kettles “were filled with generous donations from the bikers and other spectators.”

TERRITORIAL WINNERS

The Sierra Del Mar Division’s San Diego Citadel Girl Guards are the new territorial Girl Guard winners, with 104 achievement points. Rosalie Doom is the Girl Guard leader. The Southern California Division’s Torrance Corps’ Sunbeams came in first with 143 achievement points, as the territorial Sunbeam winners. Dolores Jimenez is the Sunbeam leader. Congratulations to all who participated!

NEW NORTH LAS VEGAS SILVERCREST

Territorial Commander Commissioner Linda Bond, Southwest Divisional Commander Major Don Mowery, and Clark County Coordina-tor Major William Raihl cut the ribbon on a new Silvercrest facility in Clark County, Nevada. The joint HUD and Army project has 60 apartments for low-income seniors and is located adjacent to The Salvation Army corps in North Las Vegas.

Dignitaries present included Ken LoBene of HUD, Advisory Board Chair George Manska, Station Casinos CFO Glen Christenson, and North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandon.

OFF TO ICO

Three Western officers have been selected to participate in The Salvation Army’s International College for Officers, which has its origins in the International Staff Training Lodge opened in 1905 by General William Booth.

Major Mario P. Reyes, secretary for Latino programs, Southern California DHQ, will attend April 9-June 2, 2003; Major Joe Posillico, general secretary Northwest DHQ, will attend July 16-September 8, 2003; and Major Sheila Bradley, corps ministries secretary, THQ, will attend October 15-December 8, 2003.

WORLD CLASS CHILI

Captains Derek and Angela Strickland, Modesto Red Shield corps officers, report the corps’ second annual World Services Auction & Chili Cook-off was held recently. “We had 80 in attendance and raised $1,625 for World Services–more than double last year’s event,” said Strickland. “Ken Olsen, the Army’s financial development director for the Modesto area was our guest auctioneer.”

BOOTH ‘LIVE’ ON THE WEB

Colonel George Church reports that recordings of General William Booth have been discovered dating back to February 12, 1898, made when he visited New York City. Along with the Founder’s recordings is a recording of Colonel John Lawley singing. Located on the United States Library of Congress website, they can be reached through the following links: first, go to www.salvationarmy.org then, go to the UK Territory web page and go to “publications”; next, go to Salvationist (November 30, 2002) and click on Recorded History. You can read all about it, and then download the voices and songs following the link listed there. When the page opens, click on “John Lawley” and his two records will be indexed.

MAJOR GLEN MADSEN DAY

Major Glen Madsen, El Cajon corps officer, was honored on December 6 with a proclamation naming that day as “Major Glen Madsen Day” throughout San Diego County.

The proclamation, signed by all five San Diego County supervisors, noted Madsen’s diligent and faithful service in providing for the needs of impoverished East County residents, among a host of other notations.
