MAN OF THE YEAR

Jonathan Harvey, who is in-charge at the Farmington Corps, Arizona, was named Man of the Year during the Four Corners Conference for Professional Development, attended by 400.

The award was based on overall positive influences, character, personal and professional accomplishments and community affiliations. Local attorney Curtis Gurley presented Harvey with his award, and noted that “He is constantly striving to be a better person; he has an open-door policy for anyone who needs counsel or a listening ear.”

LAURA ON HIV/AIDS TEAM

Santa Rosa soldier Laura Robinson will take up a new position as administrative assistant to the HIV/AIDS regional team in Africa. “It will be my responsibility to set up and maintain a central office for the team who are located all over the continent,” she reports. In late January she will travel to Durban, South Africa for a weeklong seminar with 70 other people working in the AIDS field from various organizations.

MEMORABLE ENROLLMENT

Two senior and two junior soldiers were enrolled recently at the Santa Monica Corps, under the leadership of Captains Brian and Iva West. Lt. Colonel Donald Bell enrolled the soldiers, charging them to use the Bible as a guide to living. New soldiers are: Gavino Castillo, Vicki La Variega, Anthony Conway, and Leo Carrera.

The day was especially memorable for mother and son Vicki La Variega and Leo Carrera. “It is nice to see families make such a loving commitment together,” said Assistant Corps Officer Captain Marcey Hoffschneider.

KEEP OLSEN IN PRAYER

Major Mike Olsen reports he will be traveling to Lubumbashi (the former Elizabethville)–which is nearly 1,800 km from Kinshasa, near the Zambia and Angola borders. He will travel with Major Gracia Matondo, of Kinshasa, who “is concerned about the many war refugees there and those starving from the effects of the fighting,” said Olsen, who will send a report to New Frontier.

A BLESSING FROM WHITE SHIELD

A few weeks ago the girls at Portland White Shield were asked to write what White Shield means to them. “In this very busy season when we are all stressed and in the midst of the Christmas activities,” said Director of Special Projects Tammy Bottcher, “the following quote is a reminder of why we are here, and why we do what we do.”

I was lost and you helped me find my way to the right path. I was weak and you taught me to be strong. I messed up and you gave me a second chance. I was confused and you made me understand. I forgot and you helped me to remember. I didn’t know and you helped me to realize. I had open wounds and you cleaned them. I fell down and you reached out your hand.

NATIONAL CHRISTMAS KICK OFF

The 2002 National Kettle Kick Off, held during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game, featured international recording star LeAnn Rimes. It was the sixth consecutive Thanksgiving Day half-time performance and was nationally broadcast by FOX.

“As a result of our economy and the lasting impact of national tragedies, Salvation Army services have been in demand as never before, with the Army assisting a record 38 million people last year,” said Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. “Donating to The Salvation Army is one of the best ways to help a great many who remain in need, because nearly 90 percent of every donation goes directly into funding programs that change lives.”

Each year, 20,000 Salvation Army red kettles serve as collection stations around the nation.
