LAS VEGAS STYLE

Majors Neil and Kathie Timpson, Las Vegas corps officers, report that once every quarter the Las Vegas Corps hosts a night of quality Southern Gospel style music in a concert setting. “Our first event took place recently, with 240 in attendance and 25 made a commitment to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,” reports Neil. The event has been planned as part of the corps’ outreach to the community.

FREEMON ON BOARD

Melinda Freemon, Alaska Division, has been reappointed to the Governor’s Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse for a four-year term, ending July 1, 2006.

BOND AT SAN DIEGO ARC

The San Diego ARC enjoyed a special visit by Commissioner Linda Bond, territorial commander. The Commissioner delivered the Sunday chapel sermon, toured the center for the first time, and visited with residents in the rehabilitation program. It was a memorable Sunday for these men and women, who responded to Bond’s warm words of encouragement and personal interest in their recovery. Major Doug Williams, ARC administrator and Major Jan Williams hosted the visitors, who also included ARC Commander Major Ronald Strickland and Major Pamela Strickland.

POMONA HOLDS HARVEST FESTIVAL

For the 28th consecutive year, the Pomona Corps, Calif., hosted its Harvest Festival party on Halloween as an alternative to trick-or-treating, and attracted more than 600 children. According to Corps Officer Captain John Tolar, more than 3,000 pounds of candy were distributed as prizes at various game booths and at the door. In addition, a devotional was held in the chapel, led by Corps Sergeant Major Cathy Hill.

Staffed by 29 volunteers from the corps’ English and Spanish congregations, the event was organized by the Women’s Home League and youth groups, led by HL Secretary Adrienne Winkels and Young People’s Sergeant Major Kim Pickering.

INDIA WEBSITE

The Salvation Army in India has launched a new, national website: www.salvationarmy.org/ind that provides up-to-date national news together with reports from the six Salvation Army territories in India. Major Ted Mahr, executive secretary, health and social services, comments: “In most parts of India, very few people seem to be aware of The Salvation Army and its contribution to the life of society. With the Internet available at ‘cyber cafes’, even in small towns, the web site promises to provide the public, especially young people, with an insight into–and, we hope, an appreciation for–The Salvation Army in India. Majors Ted and Roslyn Mahr are Western Territory officers who have served in India for more than 20 years.
