BUZZ ABOUT GOD’S LOVE

The Salvation Army in Santa Rosa held a Vacation Bible School with the theme of “Where kids learn the buzz about God’s love!” Over 40 enthusiastic community kids attended this annual event. Every evening they participated in skits, sang songs, enjoyed a time of creative expression through crafts, played games, and learned about God’s unconditional love for them. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, a nutritious dinner was served each night.

AUXILIARY COOKS UP CARING

Joyce Johnston reports that the Puyallup Valley Corps Women’s Auxiliary, Wash., has recently published a new cookbook, Hospitality is Homecooking. Developed as a fundraiser, members will be at the Puyallup Farmer’s Market in late August, hoping to sell more books and interest women in becoming members.

As a result of a visit from Jeni Gregory of the Northwest Medical Team, the auxiliary put together 62 toiletry kits that will be used by the medical teams that go to Third World countries. They are given to individuals treated by the team.

NEWEST THRIFT STORE

The ARC opened its newest Family Store and Boutique in San Diego recently. Located in the Rolando Plaza at 6503 University Avenue, the 11,000 square foot building is stocked with thousands of reusables, furniture, clothing, appliances and electronics.

“We are especially excited to be part of the Rolando neighborhood, which is experiencing a revitalization with the addition of the splendid new Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center nearby,” said Major Doug Williams, ARC administrator.

NW BRASS AND CHORUS

Northwest Brass and Chorus members have been busy, participating in the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade, Portland Rose Parade, and a ministry concert at Longview Temple, Wash. celebrating the corps’ 80th anniversary. Corps Officers Majors Erik and Angie Sholin hosted the group. The last concert for the year was held at the Olympia Corps. Carl Darby directs the group, composed of members from 13 different corps.

SLOAN HONORED

San Jose, Calif., ARC Administrator Captain Barbara Sloan was awarded the Kiwanis International Tablet of Honor for exceptionally dedicated service to high school Key Club youth, innovative and energetic fund raising campaigns, and for selfless service as club vice president and committee chair.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations go to Brigadiers Bienvenido and Adela Acosta, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their wedding vows in Hilo, Hawaii. Married on July 29, 1952 in Manila, Philippines, they were in active service as SA officers for 44 and 39 years, respectively, and transferred to Hawaii in 1970.

Lt. Colonel Gladys Bodine began treatment for melanoma on August 12 with a combination of chemotherapy and biotherapy. Cards of encouragement may be sent to 1258 Lindsay St., Chula Vista, CA 91913-1431.

ARMY UPDATES

Effective August 15, 2002, Captains Daniel and Anya Henderson, currently corps officers (pro-tem), Denver Red Shield, Intermountain Division, are appointed to pioneer the Army’s work in Narva, Estonia, which is a part of the Finland and Estonia Territory.
