by Sue Schumann WarnerIt’s May…and that means changes. For those on the move, it’s exciting, challenging, (and usually exhausting!). Fortunately, God’s promise to Joshua extends to us in the West even today: “I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses…Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:3,9) Seems like a good reminder for the rest of us as well.

GOOD DEEDS

Thirteen girls from Girl Scout Troop 290 recently visited the Amphi Corps and Youth Center in Tucson, AZ, to share cookies and games with the corps youth during their after school program. Meanwhile, in Green Valley, youth from Sahuarita Middle School collected over $600 to assist earthquake victims in India. Ministry leaders Ron and Evelyn Weppler, in-charge, thanked the students and guaranteed every penny would go directly to the Army’s earthquake relief.

ENERGY ASSISTANCE

Thanks to a $50,000 energy share grant from Southwest Gas, the Victor Valley Corps, CA, has helped pay a portion of outstanding gas bills for 712 local underprivileged families. In addition, the corps is helping those in need with utility and rental assistance and emergency lodging through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Corps Officers Captains Emmanuel and Laura Henry-John state “We want to do as much as possible to help during these difficult times.”

TURK STREET REACHES OUT

San Francisco’s Turk Street Central Corps has expanded its efforts into the Bayview district, reports Major Neil Timpson. The corps has joined with Rotary International, Network for the Elders, businesses, churches and neighbors to become a member in a partnership of organizations supplying spiritual and physical assistance to the Bayview.

UTAH HONORS FAMILY

The Lee and Ruby Hammel family was honored recently by the Utah State Legislature with a Commendation for being the United States Tennis Association’s Ralph W. Westcott USTA Family of the Year. Son Brad is an alcohol and drug counselor for the Salt Lake City, UT, Corps.

AWARD-WINNING OMM

The Salvation Army’s Office of Media Ministry (OMM), a TV, video and film company, has received two highly acclaimed awards for the 2001 Salvation Army National Public Service Announcement (PSA). OMM was named a silver winner in the 2001 Summit Creative Awards and a silver winner in the 22nd Annual Telley Awards, both given for the PSA. Major Mark Brown is the director of operations and Stan Gilbert is senior producer.
