When a friend like Lt. Colonel Bill Hunter enters life eternal, it reminds me that my own life on Earth is limited. Days are precious. Each minute counts. I’m looking forward to seeing Bill again one day in Glory. In the meantime, I’ll join Salvationists throughout the West in trying to live faithfully and well…one day at a time.

BUSH VISITS ARMY SR. CENTER
 President George W. Bush observed one of Maine’s top senior citizen center programs, run by The Salvation Army Portland Corps in Maine.

Divisional Commanders Captains Richard and Janet Munn discussed the unique nature of center programs, which include field trips, computer classes, summer day camps and recreational activities. Captain George Hood, public affairs director at national headquarters, served as tour guide for the president.

The Portland Center provides 10,000 meals annually to seniors at this location. The center also delivers 35,000 meals on wheels to the homebound. This program is staffed by volunteers who joined senior citizens in a dialogue on Medicare and Medicaid. President Bush delivered a policy address to the Chamber of Commerce following his visit to The Salvation Army Senior Center.

ASPEN ASSISTANCE
 The Salvation Army provided assistance in the aftermath of the recent crash of an airplane outside of Aspen, CO. All 18 passengers were killed. “The Salvation Army of Grand Junction dispatched a canteen with five volunteers, who arrived at 1:30 a.m.,” reported Tom McSherry, territorial emergency disaster services coordinator. “They served hot drinks and snacks to the responders from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s office and other agencies.”

HAWAII GROWS
 Major Clarence Orion reported that Envoy Alan Carlson, Hawaii ARC administrator, recently enrolled John Bargas and Issac Mahelona as new adherents at the ARC and Kauluwela Mission Corps. “The work of the Honolulu ARC is going great under the leadership of Envoys Alan and Tanya Carlson,” he added.

FOOD FOR ALL
 North Las Vegas, NV, Mayor Mike Montandon challenged Henderson, NV, Mayor Jim Gibson to see which city could collect the most food for The Salvation Army. Montandon made an all-out effort recruiting businesses, schools, residents and friends to join in this effort. North Las Vegas City Hall served as the main drop-off location. With the amazing support of the people of North Las Vegas and especially concerned citizens like Tom Losee, the drive was spectacular. The winner of the challenge? The people in need who are served by the Army! More than 35,000 pounds of food were collected.

SCHOLARSHIPS GIVEN
 So. Calif. Divisional Commander Alfred Van Cleef reports that, for the fifth year, the Los Angeles Korean Corps, under the leadership of Captains John and Ruth Lee, has sponsored a musical program to raise funds for college scholarships. Three $1,000 scholarships were presented to students.
