Maybe you felt the same way. Aren’t you glad “our God is a rock” (Isaiah 26:4) who is solid and unchanging? I am. I’m glad The Army’s ministry is constant as well…

ARMY WINS COMMUNITY AWARD

Group Publishing of Loveland, Colo., awarded The Salvation Army of Weld County its 2000 Community Service Award for the Cultural Arts at an awards banquet recently. The award was presented for the Army’s Summer Arts Camp and includes a $1000 grant. Lts. Tim and Sybil Smith are Greeley corps officers.

KOREAN OUTPOST BECOMES CORPS

Dedication services were held recently to mark the transformation of the Tucson, Ariz., Korean Outpost to an official corps program. Korean Corps officers Captains Peter and Ok Kim addressed a congregation of 300. Retired Commissioners Peter and Grace Chang and divisional leaders Lt. Colonels Olin and Diane Hogan presided over the ceremony.

The nine Adult Rehabilitation Centers located in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties, participated in a Holiday Book Drive to collect donated children’s books for needy schools in their local areas. Through the combined efforts of The Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, over 150,000 donated books were collected. Scholastic Books, a publisher of children’s books, pledged to match one new book for every donated book collected. The Holiday Book Drive was sponsored by The Los Angeles Times “Reading By 9” program to help kindergarten through third grade students read at grade level by the age of nine.

B/M Harry Stillwell, Order of the Founder, recently fell while getting out of his wheelchair, resulting in a broken hip. MARTY PLONE HONORED

At a meeting of the Livermore Rotary Club, Dr. Martin “Marty” Plone received a plaque from The Salvation Army Del Oro Divisional Headquar-ters and The Salvation Army Livermore Services Extension, honoring him for his 27 years of service to the Army and the people of Livermore, Calif.

CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WEST

The Puyallup Valley, Wash., Corps kicked off the holiday season by participating in the Puyallup Christmas Parade, a first for the corps. Corps Officer Capt. Mark Nelson, accompanied by an auxiliary and an advisory board member, drove a canteen decorated with lights and a wreath.

The Redding, Calif., Corps won first place in the annual Redding Christmas Light Parade. Corps volunteers, along with Corps Officers Captains Mick and Leslie Souders, decorated the canteen with lights and garland. “We’ve received great publicity and acquired many, many more kettle volunteers as a result,” Souders said.

The United States Army Ft. Carson, Colo., partnered again with The Sal-vation Army to make the community holiday dinners program a reality. The food for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day’s were prepared in Ft. Carson kitchens and transported by U.S. Army vehicles to the four feeding sites.

Major General Edward Soriano, Ft. Carson Commanding General and Major Stephen Owen, Salvation Army County Coordinator jointly voiced appreciation to 1,335 volunteers for serving 10,112 meals to the lonely, homeless, and less fortunate.
