Young Salvationist winners
Congratulations to five Western Salvationist youth who won awards in the 2008 Young Salvationist Creativity Contest: Fiction (ages 11-16) first placeIsabella Bottjen, Haines, Alaska; non-fiction (ages 17-23) second placeSarai Henry-John, La Puente, Calif.; poetry (ages 11-16) second place—Marianna Walker, Las Vegas, Nev., third place—Stephanie Freeman, Eagle Ida.; original art (ages 11-16) third place—Caitlynn Watson, Albuquerque, New Mex. The announcement was made in the May 2008 issue of Young Salvationist, which printed a number of the winning entries.

Santa Ana Temple supports soccer
The Santa Ana Temple, Calif., corps has hosted an 18-team community soccer league at the corps for the past 10 months, reports Corps Officer Captain Lex Giron. The corps’ two teams, Blood & Fire, and Santa Ana Temple took first and second place, respectively, at the recent league finals; Olímpico and Sacatepec USA were third and fourth. Players are mostly first and second-generation Hispanic youths and young adults; Francisco Mancia directs and coordinates the league. Giron notes that a women’s soccer league, under the direction of Juan Mejia, was recently created.

Officers earn degrees
Congratulations to the following officers who have recently earned degrees:

Captain Katina Hanson, Long Beach, Calif., ARC director of special services, has recently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational leadership—cum laude from Azusa Pacific University.

Captain Michael Paugh, CFOT marketing coordinator, has earned a Bachelor of Arts (advanced) in Christian Studies degree from William and Catherine Booth College.

Major David Sholin, Richland, Wash., corps officer, has earned a Bachelor of Arts (advanced) in Christian Studies from William and Catherine Booth College.

ARC updates
In February, the Sacramento, Calif., Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) began selling books online; sales have grown so rapidly, they expect to hit 500 sales per day soon.

Graduates from the Stockton, Calif., ARC, are enjoying a great opportunity: a culinary arts program at Hope Harbor in Lodi, Calif., is equipping up to 12 men and women per 16-week session for future careers in the food service industry, and offers tuition, room and board for applicants that have successfully completed a prescribed rehabilitation program such as the Arc offers.
