Grant aids Colorado Springs shelter
The Salvation Army RJ Montgomery New Hope Center—which is Colorado Springs’ only 24/7 emergency shelter—received a $100,000 Daniels Fund grant recently. The downtown homeless shelter operates solely on donations from individuals, business and foundations such as The Daniels Fund. “This gift will enable us to continue services to those most in need in Colorado Springs,” said Major Don Gilger, El Paso County Coordinator.

Red kettle yields gold coin
Last year, a red kettle in Eugene, Ore. yielded an unusual surprise. “Many times we are pleasantly surprised by extra large gifts of cash or checks stuffed into a kettle,” said Corps Officer Major Joe Murray, “but a gold coin, an Austrian Ducat, really was a most unusual gift by an anonymous donor!” The coin was valued at more than $300.

Jr. soldiers serve others
The junior soldiers at the Klawock Corps, Alaska, recently completed their first service project towards their Standard of Achievement, helping support the community food drive. Corps Officer Captain Debra Davis shared, “Our junior soldiers assisted with unloading food from the van as well as learning how to sort the food and stock shelves in the food panty.”

Cold weather challenge
Wal-Mart presented a $5,000 check to Alaska Divisional Commander Major Doug Tollerud to support the Fairbanks Red Kettle Campaign. With temperatures often well below zero for extended periods of time, placing bell ringers outside is often impossible. This is the second year Wal-Mart has provided this special grant to Fairbanks. Additionally Wal-Mart recently presented a check for $1,000 to help purchase toys for the Operation Santa project to The Salvation Army.

Changes in Africa
As of March 1, 2008, the Mozambique Region of the Southern Africa Territory will be granted command status and known as the Mozambique Command. On that same date, the Army’s work in Angola will be given command status and be known as the Angola Command. The Congo (Kinshasa) & Angola Territory will be known as the Congo (Kinshasa) Territory. Keep in prayer the Army’s work in these difficult areas.
