Anchorage votes TSA ‘Best of Alaska’
Readers and subscribers to the Anchorage Daily News voted The Salvation Army in Alaska as the Platinum level Best of Alaska Non-Profit Agency. “This is a new category this year, and we are honored and humbled by this wonderful expression of support for our ministry to the people of Alaska,” said Jenni Ragland, associate director, Alaska Division community relations. “We were in the esteemed company of several other agencies who were recognized for their excellent work, including the American Red Cross of Anchorage, Habitat for Humanity and United Way of Anchorage, who were announced as Gold level winners.”

Denver ARC hosts open house
The Denver ARC, under the direction of Captains Grady and Julie Brown, hosted an open house recently. Invitations were sent to area universities and colleges, probation and parole departments, public defenders, ARC vendors, advisory organizations, social service organizations, and Salvation Army corps and units. Highlights included a presentation on the ARC men’s and women’s program, tours of the facilities, and a time for networking. “Many of the attendees were unaware of the scope of the program,” said Capt. Julie Brown. The response has already been felt, as several new interns have applied, and several new applicants for the program have been added to the waiting list.

Chandler gets a makeover
Thanks to 200 volunteers from Valley Partnership, the Chandler, Ariz., corps received a complete makeover recently: the workers installed playground equipment, a rock-climbing wall, a tetherball court, and playing fields for neighborhood youth to enjoy. In addition, they planted grass, trees, plants, painted two buildings, and much more. In all, over $150,000 of in-kind services and equipment was provided by the coordination of Valley Partnership and local businesses—allowing The Salvation Army to direct its limited funds to improving other services it offers to the community.

Woodruff represents Army
Michael Woodruff, general counsel for the Western Territory, participated in a three-hour live webinar sponsored by the National Institute of Corrections, U.S. Department of Justice, to an international audience of some 10,000 persons on the subject of how federal and state government agencies in the corrections field can legally work with faith-based organizations. “The Salvation Army’s identification was prominent in this program,” said Chief Secretary Lt. Colonel Donald Bell. “The program encouraged government agency administrators to include organizations like the Army when seeking the resources of non-government organizations, and it encouraged the faith-based and community organizations to make a vital contribution to the inmate rehabilitation and re-entry into society.”
