Denver Red Shield a finalist
Captain Ron McKinney reports that the Denver Red Shield, Colo., is one of three finalists for the 2007 El Pomar Award For Excellence in the Sports and Recreation Category for Colorado Nonprofits. Being a “finalist” guarantees a grant of $7,500 with the possibility of winning the ultimate grant of $25,000 at the 19th Annual Awards for Excellence Banquet on November 28, 2007 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. “The Awards For Excellence Selection Commission recognizes The Salvation Army Denver Red Shield Community Center as one of the three best programs among all similar nonprofits in Colorado,” said McKinney.

Cheyenne assists at Frontier Days
Over 1,400 rodeo contestants participated at the 111th annual Frontier Days held July 21-30 in Cheyenne, Wyo., an event attended by thousands. The Air Force Thunderbirds also flew for the 54th consecutive year. “The Cheyenne emergency disaster services (EDS) canteen was mobilized as well,” stated Cheyenne Corps Officer Captain Dave Shull. “A total of 20 volunteers gave over 333 hours of their time and served over 8,000 cups of coffee and 290 gallons of water.” This year marked the 22nd year that the Cheyenne EDS unit has been in attendance.

Coeur d’Alene celebrates
Over 400 people gathered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to celebrate with the Army in breaking ground on the $72 million Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Major Ralph Hood, secretary for personnel, announced the groundbreaking goal had been met and that The Salvation Army was making $64 million available to build and endow the center. Sandy Patano was master of ceremonies; also participating were vocalist Ruth Pratt, Project Director Major John Chamness, Advisory Board Chair Sandi Bloom and campaign co-chairs Art Brown and Jack Riggs.

Rotary recognizes Walton
Sandra Stefffeney, Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club out-going president, recently recognized Tacoma, Wash., corps Business Administrator Frank Walton as: Rotarian of the month; 100% attendance 2006-2007; and presented a certificate of appreciation (fine master).
