Spirit of the West podcast
Josh Cowing reports the latest Spirit of the West podcast is now available. Spokane helps 4,800 families in one day
The Spokane, Wash., Salvation Army received 6,000 turkeys from Second Harvest Food Bank to give to families in need during their annual Thanksgiving distribution. Serving as the largest Thanksgiving distribution in Spokane County, over 200 staff and volunteers worked at the community center throughout the day as they greeted people, handed out frozen turkeys and bags of food, and spread Thanksgiving cheer to all who came through.

Bernie Koizumi honored
Salvation Army Women’s Way graduate Bernie Koizumi recently received a Hawaii state proclamation honoring her achievements in helping people become successful in their drug and alcohol recovery program. Bernie started her janitorial and maintenance service program after graduating from Women’s Way. She now employs 11 people who are in recovery, giving them a second chance to find their rightful place back in society. During the ceremony, Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor James “Duke” Alona congratulated Bernie for her achievements.

Stockton ARC hosts guest chef
The Stockton, Calif., Adult Rehabilitation Center recently hosted guest Chef Nicholas Jones of the Stockton Golf & Country Club, who supervised the regular kitchen crew in preparing and serving a delicious gourmet meal for the entire residence. ARC Center Chef Hugh Hinman, who arranged Jones’ visit, gave him a tour of the center and explained the operation of the ARC. “He came away with a new sense of how important food is to the men in our program, and the vital role it plays in recovery,” said Hinman.

Portland shelter is SAFE
Women living on the streets in Portland, Ore., will find safety and warmth at the newly opened SAFE Shelter for women at the Harbor Light Shelter. “The shelter is open just in time for women to escape the cold winter weather,” said Divisional Commander Major Bob Rudd. “The City of Portland has been a great ally with us so we can provide the homeless women of Portland a safe place to be.” Approximately 750 women are homeless in the Portland Metro area at any given time.
