NAOC: save the date

Major George Hood, national Community Relations & Development Department secretary, has announced that the National Advisory Organizations Conference (NAOC) is slated for April 26-29, 2007 in Dallas, Tex. Red Shield makes music

More than 50 children are receiving music lessons at the LA Red Shield Youth and Community Center, thanks to a grant from the Majestic Realty Foundation that funded a music enrichment program called Sound Art. Classes in guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and band ensemble are being offered. “Some of the children showed up [to sign up] with guitars strapped to their backs, eager for lessons,” said Catherine Goldwyn, executive director and founder of Sound Art. According to Irene de Anda Lewis, Red Shield executive director, additional funds from other donor partners are also being sought.

Groundbreaking at Phoenix Citadel

The Phoenix, Ariz., Citadel Corps is set to launch a $4.2 million expansion project in July. “We are extremely excited about all this project will bring to our community,” said Corps Officer Major Harry Lacey. The new facility will include a gymnasium, an expanded computer lab, a large fellowship hall and a sizable increase to its sanctuary, in addition to classrooms for its current programs. Special attendees at the May 12 groundbreaking included Dr. Ruth Anne Marston, Citadel Advisory Board member and retired Roosevelt District school superintendent; Paula Brown, past building committee chairperson; and Captain Robert S. Lloyd, territorial Property secretary.

Congratulations grads

The San Bernardino, Calif., corps recently honored graduates from their Path to Prosperity program. Cris Garza, Ray Zacarias, David Ramos, and James Lein received degrees and Trent Bush received a certificate from San Bernardino Valley College. Congratulations to you all!

Kroc Scholars

The San Diego, Calif., Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center’s HopeShare program will offer a summer school program called The Kroc Scholars with Creative HeARTS. The free program will meet once a week, and enable children to keep their school skills at task, or even improve them. Youth will be able to use the Kroc Center library and computer lab, and will enjoy participating in the arts program at the center. Elly Garner, Miss San Diego 2006, is helping to coordinate the program and will be one of the volunteer tutors.

Youth to Italy and Hong Kong

The San Francisco Asian American Yerba Buena Corps will be sending two mission teams overseas this summer: Chi Hy and Diane Wu will serve on a children’s ministries team to Hong Kong; Chris Toy, Amelia Jones, Nikole Lim, and Brandon Toy will serve as summer camp staff in Italy.
