Modesto recalls 1906

Captain Michael Dickinson, Modesto, Calif., corps officer, passed along the following historical news item—a wonderful reminder that the Army has been “Doing the Most Good” for many years…. “On May 25, 1906 it was reported that Modesto’s Mayor Broughton felt that the $830 in reserve should go to The Salvation Army for its use because ‘There is apparently no organization whose integrity and moral standing is so high as The Salvation Army.’”
“The quote is in reference to giving money to the Army for earthquake relief,” noted Jennifer Byrd, Golden State divisional public relations director; the item came from the March/April 2006 issue of Stanislaus Stepping Stones, a bimonthly journal of the McHenry Museum and Historical Society.

Phoenix Citadel enrolls soldiers

Major Harry Lacey, Phoenix Citadel, Ariz., corps officer, reports, “On Sunday, April 16, it was my pleasure to conduct the swearing-in ceremony for four senior soldiers: James Flannery, Reg Evans, Brianna Aird, and Tori Gosney.”

Resource Connection open to public

As of May 1, Resource Connection (formerly Supplies and Purchasing) began taking direct orders for books, recordings, music and worship resources from the general public. Anaheim Women’s ARC open house

Tuesday, May 23, 2006 the Women’s Adult Rehabilitation Center in Anaheim, Calif., will celebrate its fifth anniversary with an open house. “We are so proud of what the Army has done for women in need of help to rid them of their drug and alcohol addictions,” said Major Moses Reyes, director of rehabilitation services. Every child matters in Eureka

The Eureka, Calif., corps’ annual dinner, “Every Child Matters,” honored the Eureka Fire Department with the Others Award for over 60 years of service. Marge Custis, a 20-plus-year advisory board veteran, was honored as Outstanding Board Member in recognition of her commitment and service; three time Super Bowl champion Bubba Paris gave an inspirational speech. The next day, Paris spoke again at the Eureka Corps and commended Corps Officer Captain Ramon Ocaño for his “great heart and spirit.”
