Fairbanks teens send Christian ‘rock’ on airwaves

A teen radio ministry is just one of many new initiatives helping the Fairbanks, Alaska, corps achieve its vision, “to be used by God to minister to the spiritual, emotional, physical and social need of traditional and non-traditional families.”

According to Major Richard Greene, corps officer, Sunday school is broadcast from the university’s alternative rock station FM 91.5 KSUA every Sunday morning by Caleb Fankhauser, Melissa Greene, Walter LeDesma, and Kyle Dexter. Whether the weather is 66 degrees below or plus 96 degrees, the hot sounds of the teens’ raucous Christian music are interspersed with messages of invitation and hope.

Fairbanks is the home of North America’s northernmost corps, only 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. When Dexter first convinced the University of Alaska to give the teens the morning radio spot, they wondered if anyone was listening. They persevered, and gradually, as word-of-mouth spread, the call-in requests increased. Their radio ministry is now reaching teen listeners across Alaska’s interior who might otherwise miss Christ’s message.
