More than 100 people gathered recently in Escondido to celebrate the dedication of The Salvation Army’s newest Silvercrest residence for low-income seniors.

“This is a great new building for the seniors of our community, who have enriched our lives in so many ways,” declared Major Donald C. Bell, divisional commander. “This beautiful new facility will not only provide a safe and convenient environment for our seniors, but it will also offer many social, recreational and spiritual opportunities as well,” he said.

The 75-unit complex provides one bedroom with bathroom, a small kitchen with stove, refrigerator and garbage disposal and a living room. All of the units are air-conditioned and complete with carpet and drapes. The building has indoor and outdoor recreation areas, two elevators, laundry facilities and parking.

Funding for the new Silvercrest was provided by a federal grant from the department of Housing and Urban Development and The Salvation Army.

“We have a wonderful facility next door to Silvercrest, and we look forward to designing programs and activities the seniors will enjoy,” said Lieutenant Stephen Ball, who serves as the center’s officer-in-charge. “We have wonderful people here who truly care about seniors, and I know we can offer a great deal of help and support. This is a great program to support.”
