SWEDEN—New Frontier (Vol. 30, No. 18) previously printed the story of the Swiss Salvation Army’s entry into the Eurovision Song Contest.

With its entry, “You and Me,” The Salvation Army advanced to the “Big Decision” show on Dec. 15, which will determine the Swiss national final for the competition.

AUSTRALIA—Hamish Blake, a Gold Logie Award-winning Australian comedian/actor, will be appearing in a series of Salvation Army-produced videos this Christmas to help promote the Salvos’ Christmas campaign, which incorporates the Christmas Appeal and the Kmart Wishing Tree.

For this year’s appeal, a new-look Christmas website was created: salvos.org.au/christmas. It features instructional videos on how to cook a two-course Christmas meal for $10 per person, how-to craft guides, recipe fact sheets, budgeting advice and listings for local caroling and church services.

TANZANIA—The Salvation Army’s two homes in Mbagala—on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city—offers up to 40 girls, ages 7 to 18, a “freedom ticket.”

Education-based, the program rescues young girls from the streets and keeps them away from unsuitable areas, decreasing their chances of being trafficked.

Along with an education, vocational training is offered that prepares the girls for employment, thereby offering access to a more positive and successful adult life.

INDIA—The Salvation Army in India partners with local self-help groups to tackle poverty and inequality throughout India. Gender inequality, taught and experienced from birth, is ingrained in the culture. The self-help groups provide women with a “place” for training and support, offering skills training, financial and peer support, friendship and self-esteem.

Whether the need is economic, physical, spiritual or social, the groups provide a safe arena for women to learn how to fight against their attacks and meet their needs, aiming to offer members hope for a better future.

CANADA—Themed “Continuing to Serve with Heart to God and Hand to Man,” the 100th anniversary of The Salvation Army’s work in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, was led by Commissioners Brian and Rosalie Peddle, territorial commander and territorial president of women’s ministries respectively.

Nearly 500 people attended a concert at the Red Deer Memorial Centre, featuring the Canadian Staff Band.
