ZAMBIA—The Mitanda Home for the Aged, overseen by USA Western Territory officer Major Beryl Pierce, dedicated a new big screen TV/DVD player, provided by the West’s retired officers.

Pierce recently traveled to Chikankata, her previous appointment, to dedicate the third corps hall she planted there. On her return trip, she stopped at territorial headquarters and received a new Ford Ranger pickup truck, a gift from the Western Territory.

Pierce requests prayers for Mitanda’s repair projects, and for faith in the vision that one day the center will be self-supporting.

 

NEW ZEALAND—Staff at the Toddler’s Room at The Salvation Army’s Next Educare decided to participate in the SPCA’s “Cupcake Day” fundraiser, figuring that along with appealing to the kids’ interest in animals, the fundraiser would teach them to care for others.

The center received almost 200 orders, quite a challenge for two teachers and 12 students 2-3 years old. They filled every order, raising around $230 for the SPCA.

GHANA—When a six-story department store in Accra collapsed, territorial headquarters dispatched a team with drinks and snacks for emergency personnel.

The building fell without warning before the store opened, when about 50 staff at the Melcom store were having devotions; therefore, those buried were in one location.

Salvation Army Public Relations Secretary Major Justice Incoom said that when workers saw his uniform, the Army vehicle was waved through, enabling supplies to be taken directly to rescuers.

Reports stated nine people died and more than 60 were rescued.

MALAYSIA—Two girls from Ipoh Children’s Home participated in the “Ayam Brand Junior Chef Cooking Competition,” in conjunction with the “2012 Community Care Campaign” held at the Praise Girls’ Home, also in Ipoh.

The girls’ received first prize with their Mackerel Fried Rice.

Other participants included The Salvation Army Ipoh Boys’ Home, Praise Girls Home and the Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home. Each home received a month’s supply of canned sardines, mackerel, tuna, baked beans and processed peas.

CANADA—The Salvation Army launched a food mentoring program for young mothers, aiming to help lower-income families deal with rising food costs.

Sally’s Kitchen is a six-week program teaching basic cooking skills and meal planning, budgeting, food safety and nutrition. Sessions also cover reading labels, using points and coupons and finding creative ways to encourage children to eat healthy foods.
