Dorm rooms get new faces

Students design dorm rooms using only items purchased from Salvation Army family stores.

On Aug. 25-31, The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in Happy Valley, Ore., will partner with 12 students from Multnomah University to present the “Design a Dorm Room on a Budget” competition.

Throughout the month of August, three teams of four—each with a budget of $250—will shop at the seven Salvation Army family stores in the Portland Metro area to buy enough items to design three 10 ft. x 12 ft. dorm rooms. Items such as lamps, pillows, bedding and chairs can only be obtained from The Salvation Army stores.

Four guidelines for the event are: 1) four students per team, 2) Salvation Army store items only, 3) one week to complete, and 4) complete within a $250 budget.

In addition to learning how to beautify a college dorm room on a budget during these difficult economic times, the students plan to recycle used items, use popular styles calling for vintage products, work with professional designers and spread the word that 100 percent of money spent with The Salvation Army goes directly to the rehabilitation centers serving men and women in the community.
