Dodgers and fans ‘line up’ to help tornado survivors

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Lance Cormier and his family are from Tuscaloosa, Ala. Damage from recent tornadoes hit his hometown hard so he organized his teammates to do something to help.

An hour before the game on Sunday and again on Tuesday, Cormier and several of his Dodgers teammates signed autographs for the fans who put money in the kettle to support The Salvation Army’s disaster relief work in the Southern states.

Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Jonathan Broxton, Matt Guerrier, Hiroki Kuroda, Jon Garland, Tony Gwynn Jr., Blake Hawksworth, Marcus Thames, Rod Barajas, team manager Don Mattingly, and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt joined Cormier in the effort.

Dodgers Community Relations Director Cindi Adler also invited The Salvation Army to place kettles on every level of the stadium so fans could help too.

The money is still being counted, but so far the effort is paying off in a big way for the survivors of the deadly tornadoes. We’ll update this blog with the totals in a few more days.
