Denver Red Shield celebrates Super Saturday

YOUTH FROM THE Denver Red Shield Corps Community Center participated in a variety of activites on “Super Saturday.”


To kick off the Red Shield fall programs, more than 400 members of the Denver Red Shield Corps Community Center recently participated in “Super Saturday” activities.

At 7:30 a.m. the Red Shield Colorado Starlites Drum and Drill team, more than 100 strong, reported to Six Flags Elitch Gardens for the 2004 National Drill Team competition. Last year the Starlites finished third in the spirited competition.

At 8:30 a.m. corps members joined 20 volunteers from Project Hope to give the Red Shield building a much-needed face-lift. The group worked until 1:00 p.m., applying more than 60 gallons of paint plus a lot of soap and water to the corps building and gym. Last year Project Hope refurbished the corps garage and handball courts.

At 9:00 a.m. the Red Shield Disciples football program—all 144 members—began preparations to defend their 2003 Denver Police Athletic League (PAL) Championship. The Pee Wees (6-7 year-olds), Bantams (8-10 year-olds), Intermediates (11-12 year-olds), and the Seniors (13-14 year-olds) will play seven regular season games, each in quest of the elusive PAL Super Bowl title.

At 10:00 a.m. the 26 members of the Red Shield Quilters Club met to begin working on their holiday quilts. This year the club boasts its first male quilter.

At noon the Red Shield Tang Soo Do club—61 members—met for its weekly practice. The group will be marching in Red Shield’s March of Witness on October 10.

Finally, at 5:30 p.m., members of the Red Shield and the West Adams Corps met at the Red Shield to travel together to Denver’s Union Station for an old-fashioned open air meeting—an Army tradition!
