Denise Hawk receives first Angel Award Award

Western Territorial Headquarters recently honored Major Denise Hawk, Phoenix South Mountain Corps, Ariz., as the first recipient of its Angel Award.

“This is the first time in the history of our ‘Protecting the Mission’ Child Safety program that the award has been given,” said Anne Calvo, child/vulnerable adult safety consultant. “Its purpose is to recognize an officer, employee or volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding innovation and dedication in protecting children.”

Major Ralph E. Hood, Jr., secretary for Personnel, presented the award to Hawk for her coloring competition, which taught children from Phoenix South Mountain Corps Community Center how they can protect themselves from abuse.

“Protecting the mission of the Army demands that we set high expectations for ourselves and others. I think we’ve been able to make some great, positive strides to ensure the safety of the people in our care,” said Hawk.
Denise has served as a divisional youth secretary and now serves with her husband, Major Guy Hawk, as corps officer. She is a certified Child Safety Consultant for the territory.

The recipient will be an individual (officer, employee or volunteer), who has been innovative in programs that protect children, elder or dependent adult populations that are served within The Salvation Army Western Territory. A one-page written description, outlining why this individual is worthy of this award (with your divisional commander’s approval) is to be submitted to Anne Calvo in the THQ child/elder safety office. Please include supportive data about the program, so it can be shared and utilized by others.
