A successful collaboration between The Salvation Army in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Page Youth Center occurred this summer when the Army joined its day camp program with the center’s sports and performing arts camps, all held on the corps’ grounds.

Four children from the day camp joined the performing arts class and auditioned for Li’l Orphan Annie, scheduled for the summer’s closing ceremony. All four earned major roles—one girl landed the lead character of Annie.

After the final presentation, attendees enjoyed an outdoor carnival, where Army personnel discussed the work of the Army in the community.

“One of the best components of our day camp program was building relationships with people in our community, which included other agencies, volunteers, parents and kids,” Captain Phil Smith, corps officer with his wife Lawry, said.

Parents voiced their appreciation for such an affordable, diverse and caring program.

“There’s not another camp in town with your dedication and sincerity towards the kids…we look forward to many more years to come,” one parent said.

Day camp activities included a week of vacation Bible school, weekly Bible memory verses, swimming at a private residence, field trips, guest speakers, theme days, science activities, cooking and craft classes.
